What a wonderful video this is of Dorian Hicklin restoring a BMW 2002. He let's Jay be the first one to drive it.

Quote:
Dorian Hicklin meticulously restored and modified this BMW 2002 to be the ultimate canyon carver and lets Jay be the first one to drive it!

They're a ton of fun, especially with extra hp. Manual steering, no ABS, no DSC etc etc. Just you and the car.

I met Jay Leno years ago at Autobooks when I had my CS. The store owner pointed me out and we went out for a tour and had a little chat about the car. Sounds stupid, but I didn't know who he was...I thought he was just another nice car guy at the time. Then, he drove away in a yellow Miura...I guess that should have been a clue. I've talked to him several time since at the Monterey Historics and at the PB Concours and he's always very approachable and personable.

I was the original owner of a '74 with every Alpina option available for the E9 and I kept it for 30 years. Never thought I'd sell it but in a weak moment I did and got a 58 Speedster that I restored and still have. I still miss the Coupe, it was such a great car!

I miss my '02 lots. Damn good car, just not the right one for me. I think they would be perfect for an EV conversion and have always kept my eyes out for rolling chassis.

One of my favorites and if I had the money, it would be in my garage along with the 02.

If I understand what you are implying—there actually was a 5-speed option from the factory. Certainly in Europe but even in the US there were several cars that got it and caused a stir with the EPA over their weight class because of it.

I stand corrected. I always seemed to be hunting for E21 5 speeds for swaps which were hard to find.

That's still your best source. No one with a factory 5-speed in a 2002 is likely to be selling the trans!

Check RealOEM to see the 5-speed available for the 2002 models, but you'll have to look at Euro models because BMW purged all such references from the USA production after the EPA enforcement. I have an original set of orange books which show it as an option for USA but that was removed in the next edition. They also once showed 300º cams for the US, too, but no longer. VW used to complain about 2002s using these parts in SCCA racing and Wensberg caved as Motorsport Manager, towing the corporate line, so they were no longer showroom-stock legal for 2002s even though they were verified as available in BMW's own publications.

Not 2 days after seeing that on Leno's garage , I spotted this in the wild. Really beautiful shape, curious if this one went through Dorian Hicklin's hands, he said he spent some time in Buffalo, where this one was spotted. I really wanted to get a side by side with my car, but by the time I got back this was gone.

It is a beautiful car. I was a little more interested until I saw all the crazy custom work inside and under the hood. This is definitely outside the scope of most individuals, but I'm glad to see a 2002 exalted to such heights.

Clean, clean, clean! With E21 bottlecaps, seats, and probably a five speed! Love seeing it out and about being used!!!

In 1984, I bought a 1974 2002 tii for $800 that was a slight fixer upper but still drove incredible. Cornered like a scared cat and that sweet fuel injection, wow! Wonder what that car would be worth today

Spectacular work! I love how Jay spends the time to find and share these special cars and include their owners. I always learn a few new bits with every show.
