braking when reversing causes a cat meowing sound from rear wheels of X1? (see video)

braking and coming to a comlpete stop when reversing causes a cat meowing sound from the rear wheels of my X1?

this video was captured by my doorbell camera... it's so loud that the doorbell camera's mic could pick it up from 50 feet away. I think it's getting louder as the weather is getting colder.

it usually happens when the car is cold. the sound is not present when I'm going forward and braking.

I asked the service tech about it the last time I was there a few months ago. They said it would just go away as I put on more mies... but as of today, 5 months later, the sound is still there.

Before I take it in again, does anyone have any guess on what the cause can be? Yes, I checked, there's no cat living in the back of my X1.

Thanks!

Sounds like brakes to me. To be fair you also don’t drive your X1 nearly as much as the average person, so it may take longer to go away.

the service advisor just advised me that the sound was caused by the electronic parking brake module or mechanism(?) on the left.

The tech had ordered the 3 parts required and there would be a 3 to 6-week wait. apparently they had already repaired this thing a few times on other X1s, so they immediately knew what I was talking about. I was told that it did not affect safety, so I could keep driving for now. Although I was a little disturbed when he told me that I would have to leave the car there overnight when the parts arrived. He said the job would require about 6 labor hours.

So it was the brakes, just not the typical brake problems you normally see.

I have a bad habit of asking the service advisor "how much does this job cost if my warranty has expired?"

so imagine my fake no-reaction expression when he said "the motor itself is about $1400 and the other two about $200, plus 4 hours of later, you're probably looking at around $2000" Oh well, they do frequently mail $50 off $500 coupons for BMW service at my dealership, so...

last time I heard someone who had the electronic parking brake problem was my friend who shelled out less than $300. VW parts were probably way cheaper than BMW? (edit: asked my friend and apparently the parking brake motor was only opened and repaired, not replace, so it was only $300)

as of this morning, still waiting on 1 remaining part so the dealer can fix the issue. the other 2 parts arrived last week.

however, the noise has gotten a LOT worse and much louder.

contrary to what I thought previously, the noise can now be reproduced anytime I want. It was apparently not coming from stepping on the brake pedal and the pads and discs touching each other.

It makes that sound LOUDLY only whenever the electronic parking brake is engaged or disengaged. Still sounds just like my aging senior cat when he gets startled and lets out that ear-piercing sound. My next door neighbor even came over and asked me about the sound. I had to assure her that my cat wasn't trapped under the car.

although... it does not seem to affect the operation of the parking brake as far as keeping the car stationary on my steep driveway.
