if anyone has X1 with Pirellin P Zero All Season tires, do they get hard in the cold?

my X1 had the 18" M wheels(838M) and Pirelli P Zero All Season 225/55/18 tires. I took delivery at the end of April when the weather was already warm. During the last few months, it was nice and hot.

In the last couple of weeks, weather has finally cooled down considerably. Usually around 18 to 22 degrees at night.

I don't know if it's my imagination or not, but now the X1 feels really, really stiff. I can now feel every little bump and turning into corners are not as easy as during the warmer months. However, after driving for a few miles, I can notice the tires getting softer.

Since these are "all season" and not "summer" tires, shouldn't they be formulated with rubber pounds that prevent them from getting harder in colder weather? There will probably be snow next weeks, so I guess I'll find out one way or another how these Pirellis perform on cold icy/snowy roads. (not really looking forward to it) My area doesn't get enough snow each year to justify getting a set of winter tires..

While I might not be the best example, here are a few observations that I've had recently.

Background: I took delivery of the car (M35i) in early October, here where I live, the temps floated at around 65-72F, with the 20" Summer Rubber - Pirelli P Zero Summer tires.

The ride then was stiff, the road noise was definitely present, but not invasive, just more of a low hum in the background, kind of like hearing the HVAC unit going.

The feedback of the ride was definitey more present, meaning I could feel the differences in different types of paved roads. However, generally it was a very comfortable but firm feel.

Now that the weather has significantly dropped, I have Pirelli P Zero AS+ 3 rubber on, with at this point, the same amount of miles on them as the summer tires do(400 each ;a little shy of what the supposed "break in" period is). I just received my car back from a 2 week long service visit, and I must say the car definitely rides much more firmer now.

I think the colder weather has an effect on all types of synthetic materials, that includes tires, bushings, and mounts of all sorts, which most suspension parts have.

From experience - Pirelly are harder than alot of other tires.

If the temp is really low i would go for full winter rather than these all season sh*t.

I dont understand manufacturors what does all season means when the compound between summer and winter is way way different.

But what you feel is correct

I think All season are good if you don't have extreme low temps and snow, there as a test in a UK Magazine recently and the all season are great for many markets the UK especially as we very rarely get much if any snow in many parts but do get lots of rain and frosty roads.

As for is this tyres, I wonder if the dampers are also playing their part, lower temps, fine tolerances, lower viscus fluids in them potentially, just a thought it might not all be down to tyres with the fake 'M Adaptive (do me a favour BMW) suspension' M-sports get on the X1.

There's a tremendous range of a snow traction in "all season" tires.
To my mind, the P zero is in no way suitable for any amount of snow.
It's shallow tread, lack of any real siping and hard compound make them more like skis than snow tires

Look at the tread on some Vreedsteins (very underrated IMHO), and Bridgestone all seasons. Those will give you much better year round performance

thanks to some crazy weather, the temps went back up to 75 degrees today. the ride came soft, comfortable and compliant on the same stretch of roads. (including a washboard road a couple of miles from me) Although I still have no idea if the cause is the tire or the dampers.

I've had other all season tires from Bridgestone, Goodyear, Micheline over the last 40 years. I don't recall any of them feeling different due to changing temperatures... at least as much as these Pirelli P-Zero All-Seasons that BMW put on my X1... of course, this is the first set of Pirelli tires I've ever had.

These Pirelli’s are the equivalent to buying a printer with a “starter toner cartridge”, where the cartridge is half full. Looking at tire rack reviews, you’re lucky to get 15k painful miles out of them. They are horrible all around. After losing the tire lottery on 2 straight X1s, I can’t wait to replace them.

there aren't a lot of options in the 225/55/18 size.... what do you think about the Michelin Crossclimate2? it has the highest customer ratings on Tire Rack for this particular size. of course, in my case, I probably wont' need new tires for another 3 and half years.

There aren't many sipes on that tire. Probably quiet, good in rain, maybe ok in fresh snow but not ice or slush.

Look at these. They are nicely siped, have good tread depth. The shoulders are spaced for snow. They are soft riding. Fairly quiet but they are definitely not going to win anything at the track. we have a set and really like them. Shared to show what to look for in a good snow capable all season....

Really?! Ours are on an older x5..... I better look into this. Any idea what model?

I linked to the Quad track only to show what to look for in a snow tire. In winter we run full on snow tires. The asphalt can be invisible for months at a time. That said, I love driving on snow
