In Winter: To PPF or not to PPF?
Just got a new 2024 G80, am in Seattle area.
Wanting to PPF before taking it out on the road much, but worried winter temps now (albeit doesn't get below freezing here much). Would you recommend I wait till spring before getting it PPF'd and ceramic coating? I am not sure how well temp controlled some of the vendors are in the area that would ensure a good application for both. Any insights? |

Most PPF vendors recommend install temps down to about 14C°-16C°. So as long as they are doing it in doors. You will probably be fine.
The colder the install temp, it make the film less sticky/tacky so can both make it easier to work with and trickier. If you are thinking of going PPF. DO NOT INSTALL CERAMIC. It will need to be removed prior to the PPF install . This will be a massive PITA and will require cutting down some of that clear coat. |

Many of the top PPF brands now offer their film with a hydrophobic top-coat so you don’t need to pay for an additional ceramic coating. Xpel has their Ultimate Fusion and the others offer a similar product.
The outdoors temperature should not affect the quality of the work in a good shop. Just do your homework before selecting the the installer. |

They will probably just have to use more heat to the film than usual and they have to heat the edges to ensure those stay tacked down. You WILL have air/water bubbles so what they will do is take a syringe/needle and pop the bubbles or suck out the water. Most PPFs have a top coat for some sort of coating so ceramic coating isn't 100% necessary. Some even have ceramic coating built in like suntek reaction.

Greenback is greenback .....but my PPF guy, who has a full indoor shop with heat and what not, declined in this current temp and advised to do it during the spring. Mainly as the temerature difference, movement of film during curing, especially from warm garage install - and then pickup, etc. It's a higher success rate *if* spring install could be pushed back vs installing around this time of the year. For me, I just needed one panel redone.
With that said , if it's a daily, I wouldn't wait to get PPF done later if you are considering it. Mine goes straight from dealer to shop. Find a shop:installer you're comfortable with as well as how well they -take care of problems down the road-. Last edited by chefwong; 12-20-2023 at 10:40 AM.. |

Winter is the best time to have protection from all the junk used on the roads.

If you’re planning to get PPF, get it done when the car is new and paint blemished free. After a single winter it’s not going to be blemish free and paying for it at that point is less useful. Sure you can pay for paint correction and etc but that just adds to the install cost.
