30e 2000+ kms long journey experience

HI All,

I want to share my personal experience from last week when we managed to cover 2500kms for 4 days with the kids (one is 6 one i 10).

So our driving started here in Sofia (Bulgaria) - > Budapest(Hungary) -> Bratislava(Slovakia) - Vienna(Austria) - Sofia (no stops from Vienna to Sofia).

So Sofia - Budapest is 700+ kms driving only on highways to there.Average speed was 130-140+ km/h 85/95mph (yes sometimes above speed limit but max 10% ).Battery was fully charged so i managed to get almost without refueling.

Driving in all cities was on fully electric.

Drving from Vienna to Sofia - one stop for refuel and in Sofia i had range of 250kms + i started with 65% battery in Vienna and i was at 15% in Sofia.

So we arrived at 11 in the morning and went to a loong walk till 10pm and we were feeling fine - no feeling of being tired from being 8 hrs in the car.It felts great,no issues, calm, relaxing and really comfortable.

Overal experience - after the longest trip 1005kms we all stepped out of the car a bit dizzy too much driving but in general we were ok,no back pain,no nothing i was using the self driving almost all the time,so i hardly stepped on the gaz nor hold the steering apart from overtaking. That really helped.

I have experience on that road and i have driven it on few ocasions with different cars - E90 330i, X3 F25 20d but the X1 was the laziest and most relaxing one to be honest.

Overall consumption for 2450kms - 7 ltr/100 so that is 33 US mpg or 40 UK mpg.

The best thing 100% of the time i had full 300+ bhp power .

Noise - minimal i believe if they have build the underflooring and insulation like X3 i probably will feel asleep.

Yea sometimes i miss the multilink but...next one.

We got the car exactly on 2nd of March now is on 11 980 kms all of them pleasant drives.

Cheers.

So 19inch 245s with M sport seats

Sounds like you had fun, the X1 really does seem to be a great long distance cruiser. I've been quite surprised how quiet it is and the M-Sport is great and not at all harsh, purposeful but not silly sporty.

40MPG is good as well considering the power you have on offer and a car full of people.

Nice! I think our 30e should be arriving this month. Do you use any specific settings for longer journeys? I was always worried that longer journeys could potentially turn into a situation where the car is essentially a 1.5 litre 3 cylinder car for the majority of the trip.

The car is never 1.5 3 cyl on its own..

And yes there are settings for that in general recommendations is to start longer journeys with 100% capacity and go to Personal Mode - and activate maintain battery charge.

That way you have the full power on demand and when not needed you are on the petrol engine - also the car always uses the battery but when in maintain capacity it useses it to the minimum.

Also on sport and maintain - it charges it while driving

Thanks for the tip!

What is the total range one can expect from a full fuel tank+battery set to the maintain battery option?

The dealer called today and told us ours would be available to pick up last week of this month or first week of July so getting excited now.

Really depends on driving style and speed - i can tell you what my experience is :

Driving at 160-180 km/h - approx 470kms of range,driving at 130 highway - 650--700kms.

Something important - the range that is represented on the bottom left is combined range petrol + electricity..so always have it on your mind when travelling loong distances and planning where to put some petrol.

The car is now at 12 000kms from factory - average consumption is 6.4 which is 44 mpg UK but i can say that i do drive dynamically and i have alot of highway road trips,i am sure that if a regular person is driving calm and relaxed it will go above 55 mpg(uk).

In the city for the past 3 months i used the engine 3-4 times overal only on electricity

Hi. Thanks a lot for the detailed post. It helped alot in deciding which one to buy. I was keen on the iX1 BEV but living in Romania (close to Hungary border) made me decide to go for the 30 PHEV. It makes alot more sense for vacations as the range of the BEV is not the best for me at least. Just wondering, as my average cruising speed on the highway is 150 km/h (sorry , call me crazy, but I just can't live at 120 between trucks passing them all the time ) , what is the average consumption there. And another thing that I haven't mentioned , at 140 let's say , when the electrical doesn't go on it's own anymore, if you press the gass, does it still have a punch to 180 lets say ? Meaning thay you need to do a fast overtake or something ?

Dont worry i am the same with the speed...anyway
So at 150 is arround 8,8+ depends - but in general its less then X3 20d at the same speed

No matter at what speed you are unless you are in electric drive mode (you can change that no matter in city or outside if you selected "Maintain battery" mode then the el drive is only when driving really slow) you have plenty of punch even at 180 u can feel it - from that perspective it is really a treat to drive and when on demand to be able to accelerate - of course if you want the full experience - sport mode and it becomes a completely different car

Thats good to hear, I mean I can stick to 140 -150, it's decent numbers your showing here, but in case you still want to have fun, there is more to have. Just been in Croatia past week and was nice with the GLA at 380 HP but once you go crazy, the range of the car goes down like crazy, 300-350 max 😊. Any with 100+ petrol prices in Europe close to 2 euros, the fun goes out fast 😁

By the way, does the engine requires 95 or 100+ petrol?

95 but sometimes i put Shell 100 V racing ..but you dont need it.

We have GLA as well - its a different feeling but yes 380 bhp is niiice

I've heard about some chain issues with PHEV X1 (around 80000 kms) from BMW technician and he was discouraging me from buying it, telling me mild-hybrid is better option. Basically he said that BMW PHEV design is not optimal, as electronics can wake up cold engine any time and rev it up to high revs. Any engine issues you've encountered?

I would be surprised if there are any/many PHEV U11 X1s that have done 80k?

I also don't think the latest tech will allow a cold engine to red line.
It will change up before then.

And in any case it would be no different to cold starts in any ICE car.

I also doubt but possible to be at 80k...
The fact is it is allowing a cold engine to start at higher revs - but we also need to take in mind that there are 2 cooling circles hence i believe its warming a bit the engine - further more if you are with ICE it makes no difference - if you are pushing hard when cold then its the owner problem.

There is a difference between PHEV and ICE - when you are in hybrid mode it uses the electric and you can drive lets say 40kms at 50-60km/h and then rapidly accelerate - then you have a cold engine at a higher RPM ...
Of course the car always limits it to 4000rpm when its lower than 20/30 degrees oil temp - i am looking at it every time ( the oil temp).

Thats why when it lower than 10 degrees C i always run the engine 2-3 km in Sport and swtich to full electric - that way the engine have enough time to build oil temp and pressure.
