Disable Speed Warning Permanently

Hello all,

We took delivery of an iX1 eDrive20 last week and I am wondering if the audible speed warning now cannot be permanently disabled.
Viewing reviews of the car on youtube, some comment on the fact that their iX1s had the function to permanently disable to audible speed warning feature.

When I disable the feature in our car, a popup appears saying that the car will re-enable the feature after next start of the car because of EU law.

Have anyone else seen this and been able to permanently disable this useless feature?

Can you just set the speed warning to something absurdly high?

Tried to mess around with the settings yesterday.
In our iX1 this audible warning cannot be switched off permanently.
This is something new, as I could do that in the iX1s I have test-driven.

This now has to be switched off every time the car has been switched off and on. It can be disabled by long-pressing the "set" button on the steering wheel, though.

The audible warning is emitted at just 1 km/h over the speed limit always it seems.

Agreed. I set it to 150km/hr...seeing as that is considered a "street racing" fine in Ontario, my wife never hits that speed = no chime/alarm

It's the same in Italy.
Every time you start the car, you have to disable it.
But there is a shortcut, press SET on steering wheel for 3 seconds and it will disable the audible speed warning. Of course you have to do it every time...

Can this be worked around by changing country in settings?

This is a legal requirement on all new cars sold (EU) since this or last year. It’s a safety requirement and the speed limit is set by the inbuilt camera “watching” the speed limit signs the car passes. It should not be possible to legally permanently disable it in any new car.

It’s not the same as the old speed limit warning on some cars that could be permanently switched on/off by the driver. On that system the speed limit was capable of being set by the driver.

I really wouldn’t mind this being on permanently if the bloody camera didn’t make so many mistakes, seeing side-road speed signs, for example.

As above, eu legislation that new cars from july 2024 have to have it fitted and despite uk not being in eu, its fitted as standard here as well.
You can deactivate before a journey but not during the journey.
Apparently the info is anonymous but it is downloaded at service so that the eu can see if the legislation is effective.
I have found the camera to be better at ignoring side roads than my previous makes. It doesnt recognise the end of the 20mph school signs though and I havent driven in Scotland to see how it copes with the speed signs for hgvs. Or the national speed limit on motorway gantries which my other cars struggled with. But it does work out whether I am on a single or dual carriageway so it must be more than the camera.

The base data is in the map, but it’s over-ridden when the camera spots a road sign.

Interesting that you say that you can only deactivate at the journey start. In the cars I’ve driven it’s possible to do so after setting off and while driving. In a Mercedes, voice activation switched it off (in addition to pressing an icon on the infotainment screen).

Are you saying that the disable option restriction you mention applies to the X1?

Are the cars you have driven pre or post july 2024? Its worth reading the actual regulation.
But yes you can over ride it before you set off but you have to do it for each journey, at the beginning of this thread is a method to disable it. Just not permanently.
But in reality, its not too bad, the speed sign flashes but you only get about 4 beeps and then it stops until you drop below the speed limit and then exceed above it again.

Yes they were post July 2024. Agreed that you have to do it for each new journey.

I was just wondering about the chronology….. can you begin your journey in an X1 and then several miles later deactivate the warning chime ie whilst driving? Or does the deactivation only work between starting the engine and setting off?
I’m guessing the former as in the Mercedes.

You can on mine (Aug 2024 build). I forgot to disable it one day and it went off when I was driving, I switched it off when the car was in motion.

I have a Sept 2024 build X2 with 2024/07 ID9. During any journey, the speed limit alert will start bonging so I turn it off using the "hold Mode button for 3 seconds" shortcut. Works every time - when the car is moving, stopped, whatever. No need to remember to do it when I first start he car.

I like that the speed limits still show in the HUD and driver's display - its the bonging that gets on my nerves...

There's no way of turning it permanently in the UK/EU as others have explained.

I wish I hadn’t seen your username. Now I’m craving a Steak and Stilton pasty from Barnecuts in Wadebridge! :-)

My personal favourite is a large traditional from Pearce’s butchers. But definitely won’t be eating a pasty in the car…the aroma lingers!

Interesting, I read the legislation so assumed I coulnt but tried it today with the three second hold on set and it was disabled as others have said. I think this is an interesting interpretation of the legislation but its certainly a quick method to disable it and useful to know.
