Has there been any physical signs of an overheat? Cooling fan running a lot, engine bay feeling particularly hot? Pop the hood. Inspect engine bay and see if you smell coolant or signs of coolant spraying? Puddes on the floor of garage? Failed water pump maybe?
Been there and done all that on my E93. Multiple plastic expansion tanks have cracked and leaked out (causes low coolant warning), a few lines have burst. Did replace the electronic water pump as preventative while they were doing oil pan gasket.

It could be entirely normal, but I’d want to verify that the oil level was good along with the engine coolant. I’d also listen to see if the fan comes on.
For proper cooling, the fan, oil and coolant levels, oil pump and water pump all have to be working properly. If you have automatic shutters in front, those must open when required to get air past the coolers. Where is the gauge indication? |

Thanks to all your response.
The car actually died in the middle of the highway. Towed it to the dealer and they replaced the auxiliary battery and charged me $1300. I picked up the car and it happened again so it is now back to the dealership. They have just called and said they still have no idea what is the problem. Interestingly after a few hours of trying to get it to run, a message popped up and said battery is low please run the engine - and it turned on. Last edited by edtreo; 05-10-2024 at 01:56 PM.. |

The fact the car turn on ok after a few hours is normal behavior for overheat tho, because things have cooled down. Does overheat come back after say 10-15 min of driving? Do you have OBD to read coolant temp? Forget about oil temp for now, oil temp is regulated by coolant. If coolant is hot, sure oil will. If coolant is hot then the next group to check is thermostat, water pump, radiator fan. Oh when car is cold, check coolant level as well.

My SA called yesterday asking if I installed anything recently that's draining my battery. They are not convinced it has anything to do with overheating.
