yellow engine light came on, but Genius said it was ok and "don't worry about it" ???
my X1 was driven for about 50 miles today and then parked in the hotel underground parking garage.
A few hours ago, I went to get something out of the car and saw a better parking spot closer to the hotel elevators, so I started the engine and was about to move it. I noticed that that a yellow warning light in the shape of a car engine remained on. I turned the engine off and started again. The light went away. I drove about 50 feet to the other parking spot. After I put it in P, the yellow warning light cam on again. But went away after another engine restart. I looked in the owner's manual and it was apparently a warning light for the emissions system? It was a steady yellow light. (if it was flashing, apparently it means engine misfire?) I went upstairs back to my room and called the BMW Genius. After about 10 minutes, their conclusion was that it was ok and "don't worry about it" ??? They said that unless the light remained on while driving, there was no need to bring it to the dealer. Car has about 1000 miles and maybe it's just me, but a yellow warning light in the shape of a car engine in other vehicles usually means something bad and costly. Or does such lights in BMWs mean different than a check-engine light? Thanks! |

if the warning light doesn't stay on, I wouldn't worry about it, other than to make sure to pay attention to it going forward.

Probably your gas cap...loosen it then put it back on making sure you hear a click sound...then drive for around 20+ miles....CEL will likely go out

I asked them about the yellow warning light. The foreman drove it around the block a few times but couldn't replicated it. Their diagnostic computer showed nothing was logged in my X1. He did say that more than a "few" new X1 owners had reported it to them. They reported that to BMW USA. I'm guessing that it means nothing will be done until dozens or hundreds of customers are seeing the same random issue? |

speaking of the gas cap.... I miss my very first car... a 1980s Olds Delta 88 coupe with gas cap in the rear of the car, right behind the fold-down rear license plate. Back then, car didn't care if you didn't tighten the gas cap... heck... I sometimes drove with no gas cap at all!

Typically ALL AUTO MAKERS as YELLOW as a cautionary warning not needing immediate attention. Unlike RED meaning probably not a good idea to drive.
Hope that puts your mind at ease a little |

I had that happen too - almost the exact same circumstance (though mine was running slightly rough too). Went to the dealer and they said it was a fault with the vanos system. They did some sort of system refresh and it hasn’t happened since.
