when coming to a stop, do I downshift to 1st gear or let the car do it automatically?

I'm driving the X1 and shifting manually using paddle shifters.

When I'm coming to a full stop at red lights or stop signs, do I downshift to 1st gear manually? Or is it better to let the car do it automatically? Or does it not really matter?

Downshifting doesn't slow the vehicle like it does in a standard. Let it do what it wants to do. Brakes are cheap. Transmissions are not.

Downshifting is downshifting. Sure, the 7 speed may not have the same gear ratios as a 5 or 6 speed MT, but not sure why the concept is any different?
