will the X1 know if there's little or no engine oil due to a leaking/cracked filter?

I was watching some guy clean up the mess left in his driveway after the oil filter housing in his BMW 2AT had cracked. Almost all of the oil leaked out and it was impossible to see.

But it got me thinking... what if the leak started while the car was in motion? Is there a sensor in the X1 that will warn the driver about low oil level that will damage the engine?

Yes, when oil drops below an acceptable level you will get a warning to fill oil. If it drops lower you will get a more urgent warning. Has been this way since at least my 2008 e92 3 series.
