I recently got updated to idrive 9 by the dealer because i couldn't create driver profiles due to BMW ID not being available in my region. When i got the car i remember the Hey BMW feature working but since this update it doesn't. The dealer says that once carplay is enabled Hey BMW won't work (which makes no sense to me) and anytime i hold down or press the mic button on my steering wheel the car asks me to pair a phone instead of the regular voice commands option. Has anyone experiences anything similar to this?

I'm surprised you were able to get your car updated to I9 - I thought it wasn't possible to update from I8 to I9 as the hardware is different? Or did they swap the hardware too?

(BTW, I sticking with I8 - it seems far less buggy than I9 - mine works, so if it ain't broke, I'm not fixing it!)

I think the OP meant he got his iDrive 9 updated to the lastest version. I remember the driver profile issue being posted a while back and he already had iDrive 9

Your dealer misinformed you. You can definitely use hey bmw and CarPlay at the same time. You can even use “hey siri” as well.

• Check that your phone is properly paired with the car and you have enabled CarPlay
• Check your settings for short press and long press on the mic button. I have mine set up so that a short press is for bmw and long press for siri

Hey BMW can definitely work w CarPlay enabled.... it constantly interrupts my music thinking the song is saying hey BMW

definitely not the case in iDrive 8.

I think it came with 8.5 when i got the car, they did an update because i couldn't create driver profiles without a bmw ID and Connected Drive is not available in my region (Saint Lucia, Caribbean)...so now i have profiles for my wife and i. Now she saw someone use hey bmw in theirs and has been making my life hell ever since becasue she wants it too. Dealer keeps saying its not possible when carplay is connected and that just doesn't add up to me.

I can't find any settings for the mic button. I've seen videos about enabling the mic in privacy settings but its not there. I'm 100% sure this car had all of this before the update to fix my driver profile issue. Someone who has a lower spec than mine has the Hey BMW so i'm really confused about this issue.

You were misinformed. The U11 X1 has NEVER had 8.5. You either had 8 or 9, and there is no way to upgrade from 8 to 9 because of hardware limitations. If your car has ID9 now, it had it when it was built at the factory.

Okay i called and they said it came with idrive 9. Whatever updates they did was to idrive 9. Now they’re telling me there is another software update available bring it in tomorrow because i was also having issues with CarPlay staying connected. So I’ll do that and see what happens then.

Perhaps just delete the BT paired device and restart the CarPlay pairing again.

Your dealer is giving you very bad information about CarPlay and hey bmw. If he keeps insisting, ask for someone else or speak to his manager. I don’t have iDrive 9, but I can record a video of both working. Might be better to have this video from someone with iDrive 9 though.

They will tell you to bring it in till the cows come home. Seven months of 2024 M35i ownership, five weeks at dealer. CarPlay still cuts in and out. Call BMW corporate and start moaning. Join me in my quest to fix this lousy ID9.

Funny thing about all this is because I live on a small island i'm actually talking to the owner of the dealership so there is no one higher than him i can go to smh. He has the M35i and he's telling me he has the same issues and trying to pass it off as hey bmw doesn't work with CarPlay since whatever update they did to fix the not being able to create profiles issue. It works on other X1s down here so there is no way mine shouldn't work.

A video of it working on IDrive 9 would be great though. I actually showed him threads from this forum when i had my driver profile issue then magically his technician was able to fix it, his fix just took away my hey bmw feature.

I'm very annoyed with this whole situation, Android Auto seems to be perfect though. If i knew I'd be having these issues i would have told her keep her F48. I may have to start e-mailing BMW directly or giving the dealer bad ratings when they send me these BMW Survey forms to fill out. I wish this whole thing would just be resolved because I can't understand why my wife needs to speak to her car, not having this one feature isn't the end of the world when the car drives fine.
