Update to iDrive 9 on Oct' 2023 X1

I read somewhere that my X1 is eligible for an update from iDrive 8 to 9 but there's no OTA. I wonder if it's eligible at all. Found nothing on the topic. Any of you in the same situation? Thanks!

It’s not possible to upgrade from idrive8 to idrive9 it’s a totally different operating system, there was talk of an update to 8.5 but I don’t know if that is possible.

This is incorrect, 8.5 is for bigger cars and is based on another platform. 9 is for smaller cars, like X1.

Newer X1's are already made with iDrive 9 but older cars were selling with iDrive 8 still. So I wonder if we get an upgrade. iDrive 8 is awful.

There was talk of upgrade to 8.5 but as I said before I don’t know if that is possible. idrive 8 is NOT possible to upgrade to idrive 9 as idrive 8 is on a different platform as I also said before.
idrive 8 and 8.5 are Linux based platform and idrive 9 is Android

The fact that you searched and found nothing should be telling you that it is NOT possible.

ID 8 or 8.5 can not be updated to ID 9. The hardware is completely different.

To say ID 9 I’d for smaller vehicles makes no sense at all. Fact is the new generation 2025 x3 will come with ID 9.

There is absolutely zero chance of any current iDrive 8-equipped car to be upgraded to iDrive 9. Completely different platforms. It’s like expecting Microsoft to upgrade your windows laptop to MacOS.

Unfortunately, for us on iDrive 8, it looks like we’re left behind on “old” tech. I read a BMW press release a while back that pretty much confirmed we won’t even be getting the parking assistant professional optional upgrade, or any of the cool new features they’re releasing with the 07/2024 update

With all the complaints and issues with ID9, do you REALLY want those new features? I don't have much confidence they'll work as good as people expect it to. My ID8 has been working great, sure I don't have all the newest bells and whistles, but I also don't have the headaches either.

I agree! IDrive 8 has been far more stable than iDrive 9. And tbh, if I was leasing the car, I wouldn’t care about all the new stuff whatsoever. But in my case, I bought the car, and bought it 1 month prior to iDrive 9 becoming available. So it feels like a kick to the stomach.

Over time iDrive 9 will become more stable than it currently is, and the drivers with iDrive will end up having all the lastest tech and features whilst we’re left behind as if we bought the previous gen X1.

I understand how you feel, as I normally like to have the latest tech (smartphone, cameras, etc.), but as you said, I'm leasing, so while I do experience a little envy of not having the latest OS, I also realize I don't really need most of that stuff to drive the car anyhow. Totally understand why all the ID9 owners are frustrated though with the current state of it. That being said, I'm praying my next car will either have it nailed down, or still has 8.5 (which just superseded ID8 for the 2025 model year on the car I'm looking at.)

It’s actually quite shocking that they released iDrive 9 in its current state. When it was first released it really felt like a beta software where many iDrive 8 features were not even available in iDrive 9. Its caught up on the features, but software issues are still just as bad.

IDrive 8.5 is absolutely great! Had the opportunity to use it in the LCI M3 and it’s miles ahead of iDrive 8 and 9.
