Question 20d vs 23d - is it worth swapping?

I’ve just ordered a vehicle few days ago and I can still make changes to my order. I’d like to ask for opinions from people who have the 20d engine about their driving experience. Is it completely sufficient or is it a significant compromise making it worth upgrading to the 23d? Of course I understand there will be a noticeable difference but I’m more concerned about whether the 20d engine is fully adequate or if it feels underpowered especially for highway driving making it more suitable only for city use?
Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions

It really depends on who you ask. Everyone has their own driving style.

In my opinion, since you’re asking that question, I’d suggest upgrading to 23d. If power isn’t a factor, then there is no need to upgrade. But as you said, there is a noticeable difference in power between the 20d and 23d.

I’ll do that - tomorrow I’ll call the dealership. Two months ago I picked up a GLA which I was very dissatisfied with for many reasons (mainly due to the awful steering wheel with the poorly functioning touch buttons) so I sold it and have now just ordered an X1. The GLA also had a 150hp engine and it wasn’t impressive. Even my wife noticed that it was a bit too underpowered for highway driving. I hope that making changes is still possible a week after placing the order.

Should be possible. As long as the car didn’t start production, then changes are still possible. Usually takes quite a bit longer than a week from ordering to start of production.

I test drove both the 20d(called 18d here in Ireland) and 23d and went ahead with the 23d. Well power was adequate in both the cars, but the noticeable extra power and xdrive option which was only available in 23d finalized my decision. Looking at your experience with the GLA, I’d suggest upgrading to 23d.

I did that – I changed the engine to the 23d. It required canceling the previous order and placing a new one. Interestingly the day after placing the new order the salesman called me and said he had good news - the car had just received status 150 (the day after placing the order!) and had gone into production. It's supposed to be ready for pickup in a month. At first I thought they might have found an identical model already produced in stock somewhere but after checking the vin it turned out that on the first day only the model information was available and all other details were still unavailable and updated the next day so it's really on the production line at the moment. The factory is Regensburg. I'm very happy about this

btw - to avoid starting new thread: is it possible to change tracks using the knob on the steering wheel or is it only possible with the buttons on the central console or touchscreen?

Congrats!
And yes you can change tracks via the steering wheel!

Thanks a lot! One more question: I read that there is an issue with playing music from a usb stick - the system doesn’t recognize folders so all files have to be placed in a single folder. Does the system support playlist files such as m3u to allow for organizing the order of tracks?

Folders work ok to about 95%. My albums are on the usb stick as individual folders and in general work ok and display the artwork, tracks etc. Mine struggles with some double albums which are one folder below the root and displays as 2 folders rather than one main, but I can live with that. No idea about play lists as don’t use them. IDrive 9, so the same as your incoming

So if the albums are in separate folders at the same level there’s no issue? I hope so.
The more threads I read on this forum the more I start to regret ordering this car. From the threads on the forum it seems that this car is poorly designed (especially infotainment system) and extremely inconvenient to use. I hope I’m wrong though. I'm currently reading about transmission delays that some people find unacceptable (this was one of the reasons I sold my GLA and ordered the X1 - when I drove the test car I didn't notice anything like that). I bought a fully equipped version missing only the panoramic roof because I don't like it and I spent nearly 66,000 eur on it. For that amount I could have gotten a well equipped version of the previous gen X3. I'm starting to regret my decision more and more but it's too late...

In my opinion you will not regret your decision, I certainly don’t. Stop worrying and enjoy your new car!

Well the transmission delay can differ person to person and I personally don't find it as bad day to day as others are experiencing and for a spirited drive you always have sports mode as an option. The only frustration I have with the car is Auto start stop. So ya don't worry about the decision and enjoy your car.

Thanks!
I’ve already accepted all the small inconveniences the car might have and now I’m just excited for the delivery which is planned for the end of Sept. The only thing I can’t get over is the color - my wife insisted on boring alpine white (though I have the extended M package with black accents so the car should still look quite good). But I wanted to pay extra for the individual Gunmetal II Metallic color. For me that color looks amazing. I’d probably be the only person with that color on X1 but women can be stubborn so... Below - how this color looks on X5. Too bad...
