If they keep putting the same parts in and that does not help it leads me to believe the problem is something else. Maybe? Anyway good luck getting some resolution!

Complaining every day is the least to be done in your situation
My comment (and Albert) just applies to the advanced BMW diagnosis consisting of changing same parts over and over!

I work in the controls and automation department for an engineering company and we have name for techs who simply keep changing parts until something works again: 'swapnostics'.

I'm an old fart and originate from the days of properly tracing and diagnosing faults, and repairing circuit boards and devices at component level and yes, yes, I know with a lot of equipment nowadays this is no longer possible. But still, my younger colleagues do not seem to have the ability to think critically and actually diagnose problems and these are people who on paper at least, are far better qualified than myself.

I'm guessing the techs at BMW use the 'swapnostics' principle too...

Swapnostics do work, and with modern equipment, some are designed with swapnostic as main troubleshooting procedure.
But changing once and again same items.....is insane, unless you don't trust the spare modules being used.

I agree with you to a point. Yes, swapnostics does have a place with modern tech; however, the downside of relying too much on swapnostics is that having a guess at what might be wrong, and plugging in a perfectly healthy, brand new part/module/circuit board can lead to that part being damaged by the part/module/circuit board that is actually faulty - so then you not only have the original fault to still deal with, but you also have a useless brand new part on your hands that may be very expensive.

This is def weird...some similarities here when compared to my wife's issue(s) recently. Solution was threefold:

1. New battery
2. New BDC
3. New software level not yet released to the GP (03.2023.75)

picked up the X1 this afternoon... everything works fine... but there seems to be a common theme here. the last time they replaced it, the low windshield washer fluid warning came on and would not go away.

today, the "window open" warning came on as soon a few minutes after I got home... several hours later, it still showing "window open" on the BMW app. I went to the garage and all windows and sunroof were tightly closed... but just to be sure, I opened/closed each one a couple of times. the warning message on the app continues to show window open(front passenger side)....

I have a UK 2 Series Active Tourer (2022) version U06 purchased new March 2022 after having a 2018 X1 (F48) from 2/2018. The 2 A/T U06 is basically pretty much the same as the new U11 X1.
Almost from the outset I was receiving spurious on-screen messages telling me such faults as Cornering Light Failure, Braking issues etc and that I should get the car to my nearest dealership. I did so, but they were unable to resolve the problems. I was also receiving numerous fault/error notifications via the MyBMW App on my iPhone. A short time afterwards the screen went into the same 'mode' as described in these posts from USA owners.
I called BMW UK Assistance and when the technician arrived next day he immediately said the head unit had failed. Car went into dealership and I had a courtesy cay for around a month waiting for the new unit to arrive - apparently at that time there weren't even any new head units in Germany!
When it did arrive, late 10/22 it took the dealer a couple of hours to fit the replacement. I asked what the unit factory cost was and he said it was around UK Stg£2300 (equivalent around US $2800). Has been OK since except one occasion when the SatNav wouldn't go beyond the startup screen. Called BMW UK Assistance again and was contacted by their technician who was able to reset and fix the issue online direct to the car from around 160 miles away.

[QUOTE=MAPMAN48;30387386]If there are any quality control issues in soldering the chips to the MB or it is subject to large temperature differences then there is a problem.

Makes fully sense.
It's not an OR but an AND.
Boards/components/soldering should be speced to withstand large temperature differences. If they don't,....BMW has a quality control issue!
Large temperature differences should be not a problem to a well speced and built cars, but they are!
My son PHEV (Jeep) has connectivity and infotainment issues that he relates to temperature.
Cheers

Makes sense. I wonder could this be why my car, a PHEV (though running ID8) has not experienced these issues to date? 🤞

According to my friend who has worked at a Mercedes dealership since 1998, current and future availability of the vital electronic parts are not guaranteed 5 or 7 years down the road. A 30 or even 40-year-old Mercedes can still be easily repaired using new, used or refurbished parts because they contain very few computer-controlled parts.

What's even worrying is that he says the infotainment and other computer parts on the current Mercedes require VIN# matching done by Mercedes before and during installation. It means that 10 years from now, if someone needs a replacement part and Mercedes no longer produces it, the owner can't simply go to eBay or a junkyard and buy a random replacement because it will be rejected by the car. That sound very familiar to me... like what Apple has been doing with replacement iPhone parts... but iPhones are only $1000 to $1600 at most and phones are disposable anyway.

I assume that BMW, Audi or other manufacturers are going down that road as well. Cars will become nearly obsolete after 7 to 10 years. The owner is expected to buy a new one, instead of trying to repair it.

I cannot survive in a Metric society.... even if the nearest one is just across the border in Canada. I can't even tell if 10 or 23 degrees Celsius is warm or cold weather.

All of the tools in my tool chest in the garage are non-Metric, except a set of wrenches.

My X1 feels as good as new, sort of... it just occurred to me why I'm not mad at BMW or making any real complaints. It is somewhat comforting to know that I'm covered by BMW until 100,000 miles... so I don't really feel the urgency to complain. The multiple trips to the dealer were just amusing to me.

where things are not related ...
where things are coherent m3 = almost 1000kg water, units are multiples of 10 etc.

I walked into my garage today and before I unlocked the X1, I immediately noticed something weird. I saw the right screen displaying "BMW" in small white letter in the center. I unlocked the door and it made no changes.

I turned on the engine and it continued to display only those 3 letters.(seen pic below) The screen behind the screen was normal. I turned off the engine, locked the car and started again. After several tries, the "BMW" still remained on that screen.

The car could be driven, but without the right screen, I couldn't even control the AC.

I called BMW roadside assistance and after diagnosing pretty much everything, they said that I needed to bring the car to the dealer. The problem is that the nearest dealer is more than 2 hours away. The BMW guy on the phone did say that he could arrange to have the car towed to the dealer. He said he contacted a BMW master technician who said that the screen or the system needed to be reset by the dealer... could not be done by the driver? Since the car could still be driven, I decided to wait.

A couple of hours later, the screen became normal again after I was done shopping at Home Depot. Everything was normal until I stopped by a restaurant to pick up dinner. When I got back into the car, the right screen was totally dark, not even the "BMW" being displayed. After I got home, I turned the car off and restarted it again... still nothing but a [...]
I have similar problem, but instead of black screen and logo, the screen just stopped react to touches. Maybe because of cold or whatever, but this is a really bottleneck: I can’t turn heat on, use media, turn off auto stop, etc.

Dealers still figuring out whats the problem. I think the whole part gonna be replaced.

I went to my X1 this morning and had the same problem as OP. I had two blank screens with the one in the middle of the car just showing BMW in white lettering. Tried all suggestions in this thread for hard reset - none worked. Not only were screens not working, nor were any buttons on the steering wheel or head-up display. Only controls on the doors, wipers and lights working as well as engine and transmission, of course. BMW assistance said car is not safe to drive.

Car currently in the dealership and I am awaiting their views. BMW assistance said problem is most likely the head unit or wiring loom but dealer has better software to diagnose the issue. Will report back once they have diagnosed the issue in case this affects others on here.

I said I would report back on my problem in my post above.

By the time the dealer got round to looking at the car, the screens and buttons etc were apparently working again. They said the car needed a software update (no update had been requested by the car so this was news to me and I can't help but think this is the excuse they roll out whenever there is no fix). When I went to collect it, found things were still not right. For instance, car wouldn't connect to wifi via my mobile, or indeed, the Android Auto app wasn't working (I suspect there were more problems, but I stopped at that point) and left the car with them.

The solution was a complete factory reset. Everything is now working but it has been a pain to set everything up again - it's as though it is a new car. Whether this fixes the original problem, only time will tell but fingers crossed.

Car has failed again. Not a total loss of screens this time but, for example, car is unable to connect to wifi and even the phone doesn't work. I also have BMW Digital Premium but things like Spotify are not working from it. Obviously, there are other problems but at least it still drives (for now) and the screens work. Dealer can't take the car for nearly two weeks. Will likely need another factory reset but that really only deals with the current symptoms but not the cause (put simply, those I spoke to last time have no more idea than I do).

Given all the grief with the beta testing of ID9 in the UK and the bugs, I am pretty much fed up with this car. My first BMW and so disappointed. Not even had it a year. Already looking for a new car (not interested in EV or PHEV). Had considered an X3 as my next car but worried I might end up with the same issues. Off the top of my head, in consideration are new Audi Q5, Porsche Mecan (basic spec), Lexus NX, and less seriously, but in contention, Mustang GT (V8 - always wanted one but not really practical). Maybe I will feel better in the morning when I have calmed down a bit.

Got the car back. All working but as car had a factory reset again, everything needed to be set up again. I was told that I would be paid £350 compensation for the grief I had had which seemed reasonable. When I collected the car, I was told any compensation, which despite what I had been told, yet hadn't been agreed by BMW (apparently, this is a standard amount) would only be paid under certain conditions. Apparently, I needed to spend the money on things like a restaurant. As I understand things, I have to pay for an expensive meal and if BMW agree, they MIGHT repay the cost of that meal up to to £350. I couldn't get the cash or money off a service etc. I told them to forget it, not a risk I want to take.

I was told by the floor service manager that their own car, an iX1, had similar problems but in their case, the car fixed itself after a few days, mine did not. I said it was unacceptable for a car with an OTR price north of £50k to have such problems. Apparently if the car goes wrong again, they will refer me back to sales. I know its too late to reject the car but there is a rule about how many attempts a dealer has to fix a car and they have now had three attempts. If it happens again and they offer me a decent price, I will sell the car.

I like the car but this is not acceptable.
