blind spot indicator behavior

Hi,

I noticed that the driver side blind spot indicator (orange triangle led in the mirror) is always lighting up when a car is passing by (normal behavior). Now what I noticed that this behavior on the passenger side is not the same. When I cross a car it sometimes light up and sometime it doesn't. I have the impression that it is speed dependent. I have the feeling that when I cross with e.g. 20km/h or less then the indicator is lighting up; when faster it doesn't. It is the for all types of cars/trucks.

Do all of you experience the same behavior?

It’s the relative speed, I think. So it doesn’t flash if you are overtaking, but it does if there’s a car going roughly the same speed as you, in your blind spot. I’m not sure whether indicating also affects it.

My understanding is the system uses radars inside the bumpers to detect traffic approaching at around 50 - 100 metres behind. As such, they may become unreliable if the vehicle is dirty (where the sensor is located) or if you are towing; where it will switch off.

With BMW, I've found that If you indicate whilst it is detecting something in the blindspot, the orange triangle will flash, and there is a vibration through the steering, presumably to deter you from moving position.
