2024 X6 xDrive 40 Persistent Low Coolant Issues, Engine Replacement Offered By BMW

Purchased an X6 for my wife late Feb 2024. It has since been back to the dealer 4 times for low coolant level warnings. The first two times they said it was programming errors and claimed to have reprogrammed the system. The third time it stayed in the shop for a month and the said they confirm they found evidence of a leak and then said they changed the turbo(?). Now two months after the part replacement the low coolant level warning is back. This time they admit that there’s a problem with the engine and have comeback saying that BMW has authorized a full engine replacement.

Question: should I accept the engine replacement or fight for a new car? It’s obvious this car has issues since brand new. The first time it went back was less than a month after delivery. Is there anything I should know about the engine replacement, I mean like could this also cause some issues?

I would take the engine. It’s like getting a new car…

I say this with experience - a family member went though an engine replacement after a bearing broke in his 540i a couple of years ago. The failure was due to a human error - essentially, the engine had to little oil in it, and the bearings gave up

Since the engine replacement, all is in perfect shape

Engine replacement is sure a whole lot better than BMW dealer open engine and try to fix it.

Did they conclude where the coolant went?

They’re being very secretive and cautious what they tell me. For example when it was in the garage for almost a month back in September they said that they found evidence of a leak without saying where. And when they said it was repaired, it was said to be a turbo replacement. Yesterday when I went and asked for a copy of the car’s records they said they need a day and while the service manager was talking to me he said that they had previously replaced a turbo and the exhaust manifold. This was new information to me. The manifold was never mentioned before.

Most likely a slight crack in the block and it could be in that general area where that manifold and turbo mounts. I would take the new engine unless they offer you a replacement car then obviously you’re better off by getting a newer year.

New engine means update in carfax which means price of trade-in/resale lower.
After engine replacement they won’t spin the odometer back.

Yes, as mentioned I’m in Oman and we don’t have anything like Carfax. But the dealer has said that with the new engine they will reset the odometer to 0.
