Preconditioning using remote start?

I'd like to be able to run the car's, seat and steering wheel heat (plus air car heater when cold / air conditioner when hot) when I remote start the car. On previous BMWs, I set that with the iDrive, telling the car at what temperature I wanted them to come on (at least the seat and wheel heat). On the 2025 X1 I do not see any place to set the temperature at which I want those two items to come on when I remote start.

The only option I see for pre-conditioning is when I shut off the car; the screen tells me I can "pre-condition now" (which makes zero sense) or schedule a time. Neither option would appear to do what I want. I do not start my car at a regular time.....I am retired!

Q: How can I get the seat and steering wheel heat to come on when I remote start? Is it also possible to have the car's interior heat to start also? I am thinking of days when there is frost/ice on the windshield. Do I just set those ON when I exit the car? I thought those setting would not be "held" once the car was shut off.

I never really attempted to turn on the heated seats via remote start, and tbh i rarely ever have that or the steering wheel on.

what I can say is that from the app, it's the least customizable experience I have seen to date.

The subarus and toyotas we've have previously were able to input exact temperature measurements, if you wanted to run for 5-15 minutes, other features that the bmw app does not have.

I think they've spent too much time and resources on the skins and the aesthetic of the UI instead of the actual usability of the UI.

I agree about the aesthetics - like that Modern Art on the screen! I really find that annoying. Yeah, I could do like you wrote about the Subes and Toys above with our other BMWs ('20 Z4,'22 330e). Works pretty darned good; wonder by BMW changed that. I'm in the process of buying a 2025 Subaru WRX; I'm hoping I can use the inputs in it like you mentioned above as it will likely NOT be parked in our garage.

I’ve not used the remote start via the MyBMW app often because I garage my 2024 x1. When I have tested it I found if the ID9 is set to Auto climate it does turn on the heat, front heated seat(s) & steering wheel whether I want the seats & wheel to heat. I believe if I set climate control to manual setting they don’t come in unless I turn them in myself.

Personally, I don’t want the high battery draining seats/wheel to initially go on unless I turn them on & off myself. But that’s just me.

Following...when I remote start, the driver's side seat and wheel start heating, but it doesn't seem like any climate stuff begins until I "turn on the car" which is something I thought I had already done. My previous 330 wouldn't turn on seats, but would at provide some cooling and heating to some extent before I entered.

Thanks, but what is "ID9"? I'll have to find that "Auto" setting....I've seen it before, but can't remember where. We've only had the car for 3-4 days.

You mention high battery drain if remote starting with the seat and wheel heat on.....but if the car engine is running, wouldn't that be okay? In my case they'd only be on for 5-10 minutes before I opened the car door.

What are your setting when you shut off the engine? Do you have the seat and wheel set to ON, and do you have the climate set to Auto? It's always been a habit of mine for 50+ years to turn off everything in my cars when I exit.

If you have you new vehicle for just a few days you have the ID9 (IDrive9) hardware & computer software.

When I said high battery drain I meant to say that they drain/consume more amperage while driving or warming up than just about any accessory. That goes for the rear window heater as well. That’s why I’ve always kept any of them on for as short a time period than absolutely needed.

Hope that helps.

By the time I turn off the engine both the seats and steering wheel are definitely off (as I don't need either for too long). But yes, I have pretty much always left my setting at "Auto" as that has always been workable for me in the various BMWs that have had that feature.

I can see where I can defeat the auto/on for the seats and wheel, but I do sort of like that in the bitter cold as I don't have to do it myself, but these don't really start until I get in and turn on the car even though I've remote-started it.

I'm a week in with this new vehicle, so still learning.

Thank you, it does help. Sounds like if I put the system in "Auto" before shutting off the engine I will have heat when I remote start. I understand about the drain you mention; it's a trade off.

Glad it was useful. I’m one of those guys who LIKES READING the manual. My 2024 x1 went into production in early November 2023 & as soon I got a VIN # I began to read the on-line manual so with the expectation when I picked it up, I would know what it had. Truth is there’s so much more tech in the x1 than my Acura that it took me nearly 6 months to feel comfortable with the technology. I’m still learning things about it much if my drives. Lol.

You’re not the only one! My car is currently somewhere between the factory and the port. Once it finally leaves Germany, it’s going to spend a over month on a boat to the West Coast of the US and then a week or two on a truck to get to the dealership.

I’ve already been through the manual once. Now I’m going back through and flagging anything I think I want to shortcut and settings I want to make sure I have enabled/disabled.

I’ve also read through the printed manual several times which was included for most of 2024 that I hear is no longer supplied in the 25 models.

I’ve found pinning pages & content online easier to find than thumbing through the printer version.

I don’t know how practical this may be on a phone, but iPad or other tablet the BMW guide app has indexed info, animations and links to the PDF manuals.
