Darn, I just sold a nice F150 for a steal with only 18k on it. I no longer tow boats, and it just sat in the garage taking up space. I did like it on road trips though (comfortable, 36 gal tank, plenty of power, more back seat room than a limo)...

![]() Used Frontiers sell for WAY less than equal years Tacomas yet aren't that much worse to justify the huge difference in price. A Frontier with some wheels and AT tires with a bit more negative offset and well chosen minor exterior mods makes for a cool truck. The Nissan VQ motor is tried and true and easy to work on. I know that the prior 5 speed auto was stout. I don't know much about the 9 speed that they started putting in the 2020+ Frontier. I've heard it can be lurchy, jerky, laggy, etc.

It's the Mercedes Benz 9spd that's found in the MB Sprinter. Made under license by the Japanese transmission manufacturer, Jatco. I find it pretty intuitive and smooth...says the guy who's not a fan of automatics (this is my first auto pickup).

It can be when it's cold, once you get up to temp I don't notice any issues. It's basically a Mercedes 9-speed transmission that's being produced under license by Jatco. Nissan has been using it for a few model years now in several vehicles. VQ V6 is dead-nuts reliable and makes good power. So far I'm happy with my Frontier, it does everything I need it to do.

I did test drive a Tacoma and although it's a way better truck it was also like $10k more. Granted I live in truck country so trucks go at a substantial premium down here, another reason I don't own one anymore.

Is Nissan using the Mercedes-spec MB 236.17 transmission fluid (aka: unicorn tears) in their transmissions? If not, perhaps running Mother Benz's fluids will cure the shifting problems?????

That I don't know. Might be worth a look once it's out of warranty and I start working on it myself, thanks for that nugget of info. Honestly it shifts fine once it's up to temp, that's usually within 3-5 minutes of leaving the house so it's a non-issue. It's a truck after all..

My former Ram/Cummins had a Mercedes-sourced 6MT gearbox, and some owners complained of crunchy shifts. Mopar used their own spec gear oil in it and not the Mercedes-spec unicorn tears that it was designed for, and one of the solutions for hard-shifting gearboxes was to use the proper MB-spec fluid and not Mopar's.....

I picked up a 2025 Tundra in late November as my winter daily. Love the drivetrain of the Tundra and versatility of a truck. It’s also a solid platform for upgrades. Perfect compliment to my G82.

The color is ice cap, so solid white, with the nightshade package. The contrast is similar to my G82.
