Anyone ever sold insurance?
So I find myself in a potentially precarious situation after putting it all on the line for a job I thought was a relatively "sure thing." To my credit, I had inside information that led me to that thought process so I didn't just overly inflate my chances. Needless to say, it may not be as sure of a thing as I thought, so I'm now quickly pursuing other options in case it doesn't work out.
Has anyone here ever sold insurance (supplemental health specifically) for any length of time? I'm just weighing my options until next school year rolls around and I can get another teaching job since I had to wait until it was too late to get one this year. I'm not looking for a get rich quick scheme, but I am looking to stay afloat for the next year. The spiel that AFLAC gave sounds all great and grand, but I'm too logical of a person to buy into that whole heartedly. I know there is money to be made, but I also know one could loose his/her shift if he/she wasn't careful. I'm just trying to decide between pursuing this, which could be potentially very rewarding (or very bad), or instead going with another job prospect for the next year that presents a low, but steady, income. What would you do? Either way I'm probably going to work a part-time job on the side just to be safe. Gah this is frustrating! |

I have your answer. Dont look to get into insurance sales if you are only going to be doing it for one year. Supp income, or to stay afloat for one year in that biz will not work. This is a relationship business. That is how you earn clients. And this is how you will make sales. What happens in a year, when a customer comes back to you, and you tell them you were just doing this for a year to supplement your income? Thats not gonna fly. Not to mention you need much more experience than a year to learn the insurance sales process, etc. If you are to pursue this or anything sales related which requires trust and relationship building, you need to be there for the long haul. Good luck.

Thank you for your input. You make some very valid points. I believe I'm going to err on the side of caution and work the "safe" job, in addition to probably doing a couple other things to boost my monthly income. It'll still be dismal, but worst case scenario I'll be doing it for a year and then going back to teaching - which as we all know is one of the most lucrative careers out there! /sarcasm

To be honest, I think teachers are very important. Good luck out there.
