163 and 177 how do you tell?
Reason is i may be buying a 55 plate 320d, registered dec 05, how do you tell if its a 163 or 177bhp. I have done a search and most people have said not much difference in driving and mpg, i just want to know what engine it has, how do i tell them apart?

And the 177 didn't come out till Sept 2007.
So it will be the lower BHP model

There is a hugedifference in mpg and driveabilityof the newer engine. The efficient dynamicswas introduced with the 177bhp engine..

Let me tell you from the start i went to a BMW group auction day got out bid on a silver 06 320d. then bought the si 06 in white, car came from Blackpool all the way to Newcastle, rear quarter had been painted, back window had been replaced, blisters on bumper and loads of stanley blade marks where the stickers had been removed. Then i bought a silver 56 320d arranged to go to middlesbough, did a hpi stolen recovered and dodgy millage, so now I'm travelling 100 mile to look at this one, sounds a nice car service history etc all checks out fine, doing hpi tomorrow. fingers crossed. Is the 163 still group 15 insurance? |

To be honest there could potentially be nothign between the two engines performance wise.
You could have one 163bhp with a healthy 170bhp and a 177 example with an unhealthy 172 etc lol. (when i say unhealthy, i dont mean a ill engine or turbo i just mean a car not putting out as much HP as the next, every engine is different due to manufacturing tolerances and how there were run in)

Ive had both engines, currently have the 177. There isnt a great deal between the two, although the 177 seems to have more torque midrange/topend. Went a little over the speed limit yesterday with ease, the 163 never seemed to have that urgency at the upper limits? Its only done 2500 miles so still needs some running in?
Id agree with the others, get a 163 and chip it. On a different note, drove the A3 S Line 170bhp recently, miles faster than the 163 E90. Did a rolling run comparison with my colleague's A3 against my 163 onto motorway sliproad, and I didnt have a chance, he was gone!! Quite a shock it was that much faster!!!??? |

Very good engines the 140s and 170s... can't say the same for the rest of my Golf tho (quality wasn't the best). Back to the point about the 163 and 177, visually they are different, ie exhaust but also inside you get the ED button and push-start button I believe on the 1777 and not on the 163 (I have the 177 so I;ve got those buttons). Eff Dynamics was introduced on 22nd Oct 2007 (I was reliabley informed) and my car was registered in the UK on 27th Oct 2007 so I must have one of the 1st EDs in the country, most of the 2nd hand iones you see sem to be late Nov / Early Dec.

Main difference is how much smoother the 177 is, it is as smooth as the other manufacturers 6 cylinder diesels.
It feels alot livelier too, MPG wise about 4 at most, but it does feel lively, but sure both would feel pretty similar after a map. 2007 M-Sports (177) are going for sub £17k at auctions btw, so consider this option, all will be under warranty and you can hpi any before going. |
