Fun Island Getaway (Write-Up)

This was my first time visiting Bermuda, so I did not know what to expect. We had an unbelievable experience, and I would recommend this trip, and will be returning myself. It was a fun 4 day getaway for me and my fiancee.

Proximity: Can't beat it. The plane ride took only 1:45 minutes from Boston. For anyone on the east coast looking to get away to warmer temps in the winter months with close accessibility, its a no-brainer.

People: Some of the friendliest people I have met in the world. Taxi drivers, customs officers, hotel staff, restraunt servers, and Bermudians walking down the street - Most will go out of their way to have a friendly conversation with you.

Food: Works for me. Although its mostly resort food which can be pretty upscale. Dont expect simple dishes like Pizza, burgers, etc. for dinner time. Lunches/Breakfasts have more of the simple cuisine. Also, breakfast and dinner was included in the rate. Try the official drinks of Bermuda: the Dark and Stormy and Rum Swizzles! Cant go wrong!

Accomodations: We stayed at the Reefs which was absolutely top notch. Customer service is excellent, and this staff goes out of their way to make sure every request is accomodated. The room rate was about $350 per night. And this is an off season rate, so pretty much the cheapest out of any time during the year. It was worth every penny.

Pricing: Bermuda, like many islands is expensive. Although it was a great value to have breakfast and dinner included in the rates, lunches, other things are pretty expensive. Expect to pay about $50 for a two person lunch. And $75-$150 at night at dinner for two. (For meals that are not included in the plan)

Getting around: This was the one challenge. Mopeds are the best way to get around. But we saw three moped accidents in three days. Its fairly dangerous, as the roads are very narrow, and not many follow the 21 MPH maximum speed limit. We did not rent mopeds. The bus system is very efficient, and is cheap. Taxis are another way to get around. To get from one end of the island to the other costs about $45-65 including tip - one way!

Places to see: We saw Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. (185 steps to the top) Commanding view of Sandys Parish to the north, and the capitol of Hamilton to the East. Amazing sunset view. Clear view of the ocean, and all surroundings. Crystal Caves. This place was cool. 1.2 million years old stalagtites and stalagmites (sp?) and underground waterways 100 feet below the surface. Town of Hamilton, couple of good spots for lunch. Plently of shopping. Much busier than many parts of the island. Horshoe Bay. This is a must. Amazing beach for chillin and swimming. We walked about two miles near Stonehole Bay and Chapin bay. Beautiful beach, and around every corner after climbing over rocks, its a new beach/bay to explore. Hanging at the hotel. Did not have time to do many other things, as it was a short stay. But you have to decide do you want to run around and see everything, or just chill and see some things, for us - it was the latter. Golf and Tennis is some of the best here.

Temp: It was 70 and sunny every day. It did not rain once. There were some clouds, and it did get quite windy one day. If you are expecting 80's, you need to go in the on season, not the winter.

Night life: This is a place to chill and is very laid back. If you are expecting cancun, or carribean like crazy nightlife, then this will probably not be the place for you. I have experienced the night life on other islands in the carribean and cancun, the difference is like night and day. This is a great place to escape the everyday grind, and really is quite relaxing.

We will be back!
