HDR: Photomatix
Just getting into HDR editing. What exposure settings do you guys use for editing RAW images? I use -2, 0, and +2...are those the universal numbers or do you guys use others?
Also, after you get to tone mapping, how much do you mess around with setting usually? |

Its totally subjective - different settings work for different photos. You've just got to experiment.
Some of mine done in photomatix

I do not like HDR being over used though to the point where it looks like an over done photoshop filter.

Thanks man...everytime I take pictures of a car, I get the car to take up most of the picture. However, with HDR photos, bringing out vivid colors in background items such as containers, trees, clouds, etc...calls for a bigger background! Now I need to find a good backdrop so I can start shooting.

again, like i just said in a different thread. You want the luminosity all the way up to eliminate the "halo" effect you see under the car. Also, you are probably trying a little too hard for that cartoonish effect... try medium smoothing instead (this is in reference to Jnic's rendition). Also, like I've said 1000 times, try using just 1 raw image especially when starting out with this program. more times than not you won't get the best result because you aren't bracketing properly. its not about being exactly at -2, 0, +2 for the shots... besides unless you are using a real light meter you aren't actually getting the perfect "0" exposure because you are measuring the light with the camera seen in the frame which can be wrong and distorted because of a black or white object in the photo.
Shoot raw, use 1 exposure to start off and work on getting 1 properly exposed picture rather than 3 or 5, let photomatix decide how it wants to bracket and your pics will look a lot better. |

Edit: Damn this is annoying to do. I have to downsize them now. Lol I don't know if I have the attention span for this. Bah nevermind I can't even upload the full image size on Photobucket. I got one picture working though: Last edited by AllydNYC; 12-14-2008 at 06:28 PM.. |
