Refurbished Xbox 360

So my girl and I did our xmas gift exchange early so we don't have to cart gifts home for the holidays then back to Phoenix with us. One of the things she surprised me with was an Xbox 360 (well, it gets here while we're home, so she wrapped a box with a picture of one). She didn't have the money for a new one, but found a great deal on a refurbished counsel.

Any valid concern in having a refurbed one vs. new?
How does Microsoft treat the warranty, especially regarding the red rings? Is the coverage for that 3 years from original purchase, or from when my gf bought it?

Debating if I should return it, and chip in my money to buy a brand new counsel.

as far as the reliability is concerned; my first xbox got the rrod, so i bought a used one and havent had any issues most retailers run used consoles through a decent amount of evaluation before putting them up for sale. however, when i get my first console back im planning on selling both consoles and getting an elite

Any other thoughts?
Finally got it in the mail yesterday, and it's sitting on the kitchen table. Still unsure if I should keep the refurb machine or buy a brand new system. My buddy is on his 3rd due to the RROD, so I'm a bit freaked.

I called Xbox and was able to vaguely decipher that the 3 year RROD coverage, and the 1 year limited warranty are available on refurbished machines, but that it needs to be purchased from the retailer (I doubt my gf did this).

Also, stumbled across the WalMart webstore while surfing the net, looks like they have an Xbox 360 Premium 20GB console for $260. Yay? Nay?

I'd get the Pro if you can afford it, or an Elite.

Refurbished ones are fine, in fact I think they are better than the earlier ones.

+1. All of my early model 360's have RROD. I got a new halo edition one after a RROD and it has been running strong ever since.

Any idea if Microsoft still treats warranty work the same? Or would I have to send it back to the retailer for repair/replacement?

What is RROD? My son, who is at college, called and told me his XBox360 is has a blinking red light in the bottom right of a ring of lights on the front. Its between 2 and 3 years old. Is it f**ked or is it repairable?

rrod is the red ring of death, from what I've heard it's because of to much/ thermal pasting. You can send it back and they should repair it for you. My friend tried fixing it himself, those things aren't meant to be opened by humans haha. But my friend got a refurbished one and it works good so far.

Fixable. And they fixed the RRoD issue.

How is that bottom right flashing red led isssue fixable? Send it back to Micro$oft but that could take weeks? He's thinking of taking it to BB Geek Squad but I know he'll get raped on the cost. There's some guy advertising on local Craig's List that he can fix XBox360 problems, including RROD, for < $50.

If you're in warranty I'd recommend sending it to MS and waiting.
If it's out of warranty that's a good excuse to mod it while you're fixing the RROD.

Usually the RROD can be fixed just by reheating the solder. Xbox scene has some info on that.
You can also mod your fan to be 12v constant instead of 5v.

Well, the one my gf got me also didn't have the HDMI outlet (was an '05 build). I called up the eBay seller and said that my parents also bought me one a few days prior and I had already opened theirs... so no need for his
He agreed to a full refund. So once that's processed, I'll pick up a new one with a 60GB drive.
