Just Lost my Job
Got into work this morning, checking emails and my boss says "we're getting called into a meeting" to myself and another designer. We go into a conference room, there are 5 other employees including another supervisor and the HR woman.
She proceeds to inform us that "due to changes in the economy… we need to keep changing… blah, blah, blah… you're no longer needed." Just like that, 5 of us are done. No severance, just the paper-work for unemployment, and they'll pay us for unused vacation time (so I get 4.5 days of pay). I know the economy sucks, this is happening every day, and I didn't anything wrong. but it blows big time. With myself and the other designer gone, it leaves the Senior Designer and the newly full-time intern. Basically we were fired because we were too expensive. ![]() At least I got a call from the Senior Designer offering to burn a DVD with all my work on it, so I don't lose everything I've done the past 2 years.

That really sucks but since you seem to be in design/ architecture field, don't you think this was kinda expected?
It's tough out there ...Very few new or noteworthy projects, low fees, high expectations and FEAR everywhere you look. Hopefully, it will not last long. In the meantime, we all have to find a way to keep our heads above the water. |

Damn. Im sorta in the same boat. Due to the economy we just lost two managers at my store alone. If our store drops from 7 to 5 million, I'll have no choice but to relocate again.

Sad... wish you all the best.
This is why it is so important to be careful with how much car you buy vs. how much you save. Just tighten the belt, minimize everything, and work to get by without debt... unless you go back to school or do something to make the next move - which situations like this are perfect for! Good luck! |

+1 on your comments about the importance of not living outside your means. I've been making additional payments on the M since I bought it, and I own my daily-driver Civic outright. Also pay my CC in full each month and fortunately have no tuition debt from my Bachelors. Basically my monthly cost are food/gas/rent/M payment. I think my Starbucks on the way in this morning will be my last one for a while.

Sorry to hear what happened. The corporate world can be a cruel, cruel one.
I am in the same boat as you about re-thinking my line of career. In light of what is happening, I too have decided to go back to school. Keep your head up. Things will get better.

FYI ....For those who are thinking of going back to school : I read recently that new applications are up by 40% in some schools. Depending on where you are applying and for what, getting into a new program is getting harder nowadays. So you may want to apply ASAP and not put it off until you get the pink slip if you are serious about it.

It was not on line, Mandy. I can't even remember the paper but it was on a newspaper left next to my seat on a flight recently.
Here is somewhat of a similar article (link below) : "Meanwhile, applications to more affordable state schools and community colleges are skyrocketing, making already competitive institutions like Stony Brook University even tougher to crack. The school's waiting list is expected to grow by 20 percent this year, because the number and strength of the applicant pool is so much higher." http://www.newsday.com/news/local/na...,2514588.story |
