The Associated Press news agency quoted a hospital spokesman as saying Massa’s condition was “life-threatening”. But Ferrari denied the reports, insisting the operation was “positive”. The situation is not as grave as some news reports are making out, yes it is serious, but all the reports coming back from the hospital are extremely positive. At this stage it is hoped and believed he will make a full recovery.
Hospital officials say Felipe Massa will be kept in an artifical coma for the next 48 hours to help his recovery.

the accident occured yesterday during Q2 qualifying...a rear suspension spring fell of from Rubens Barrichello's BGP001 and bouncing on the track at about 100+ km/h speed....Felipe's Ferrari F60 was couple hundred meters behind on another hot lap....the spring bounced and went straight to Felipe's helmet....while the F60 was travelling around 120-140mph.....

the combined force was about 1,600 lbs.....from what i heard from Speed or BBC....

Felipe suffered concussion, skull fracture....and was sent to hospital immediately for sugery....now he is in serious but stable condition....doctors are optimistic about his recovery....but i'm sure it will be sometime for him to be back racing.....maybe in 2010....as rumors said.....

Congrats to McLaren and Ferrari. Seems they are back in the game again. Those KERS are a real advantage on the right track. Whose going to fill in for Masa if theres a chance he is not 100% recover by the next race.

Felipe Massa can now communicate actively and is able to move his hands and legs, a Hungarian Defence Ministry spokesman said today. Massa spent the night calmly and an ultrasound examination carried out in the past hours was reassuring.

I hope he makes a recovery...but don't know if he'll ever able to race. His eye socket took a pretty big hit and if he sees again, let alone well enough to race, it'll be a miracle. What a freak accident. I little faster and it'd be over his head...a little slower and it would have just hit the car...

Wonder what this will do for Kimi's option next year...there was rumor of him even going to McLaren...Ferrari may now use him if they have to pay 28mill.

Felipe Massa's Formula One career appears to be hanging in the balance following confirmation he has suffered some damage to his left eye.


Massa is currently in intensive care at the AEK military hospital in Budapest after suffering a skull fracture following a freak accident on Saturday during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.


Although the 28-year-old, still in a medically-induced coma, has shown signs of improvement after undergoing emergency surgery, it has now emerged Massa may have sustained eye problems.


If that is the case, and the Brazilian is unable to see properly in the future, it will mean his days in motor racing are over.


Professor Robert Veres said: "He has suffered some damage to the eye.


"We don't know if he'll be able to race again.


"I don't know (if he can return). It's too early to say about his future.


"We don't know the extent of the damage. Without an operation it's very hard to evaluate its function."


Veres also confirmed on Monday afternoon Massa remained sedated "to protect his brain", which has apparently experienced some swelling, but he is out of serious danger.


Meanwhile, Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo visited Massa in hospital on Monday and insisted no decisions would be taken over the Italian marque's direction for the rest of the season until the driver's situation was clarified.


"Our first priority is Felipe's recovery, Felipe's progress and so on," he said.


"Felipe's been an important member of the Ferrari family for many years, since he arrived as a kid, so we all hope he can come back soon."


Di Montezemlo added: "(Team principal Stefano) Domenicali has to think and make good proposals for the future.


"We don't want to wait too long for Felipe, but our first priority now is to find out about Felipe, and only at that moment will we take a decision."
