**I'm about to spoil**

after watching the movie i believe that he was just pretending to be crazy so that he can receive the lobotomy treatment. If he receives the treatment, he can forever forget the fact that he murdered his wife. I got this because he asks the question about whether or not it one would "rather die a decent man rather or to live as a monster". He is essentially telling the psychiatrist chuck that he would rather die a good man (as a US marshall) than to live as a monster (a man who killed his wife) before he then willingly proceeds to receive his treatment. Pretty much he just cant live with his real self knowing he killed his wife and blaming himself for the death of his children because he didn't get his wife help. He'd rather get the treatment and forget it all, so that he doesn't have to blame himself.

*SPOILERS*

I got this as well. At first he didn't which is why Chuck shook his head at the doctors standing nearby, but did you see how he looked at him in the end after he said that? It was clear that he had come back to reality and the treatment had worked, but he just didn't want to live with himself.

Music was creepy as hell btw.....good film.

Very good movie though!

SPOILER************************

He was crazy to begin with but that was the first time they did that extreme of treatment which was the extensive roleplaying. He wasn't imagining everything throughout the movie other than those creepy flashbacks. His doctor played the role of his partner, and the staff and everyone else played minor roles in the roleplaying. He did have hallucinations though like the escaped doctor that lived on the cliff. The treatment did in fact work but at the end, he pretended to revert back to his crazy old self because he couldn't live with the fact that he had killed his wife and indirectly responsible for the death of his kids. That's why he told his doctor that it was better to die as a good man than live as a monster. Because he no longer lived in his little crazy perfect world where he wasn't responsible for his wife's death he wasn't able to cope with the fact that he was the one who killed his wife.

Spoil..

Lol seriously did you watch the movie? everyone seems to be summing the ending up pretty nicely. I guess i'll try to further explain to you what happens at the end.

First of all, the icepick lobotomy will not kill you, but rather kill your mind. After getting the treatment, leo wont be "leo" anymore. He'd pretty much become a very numb and emotionless human being. Its like erasing your current personality and living the rest of your life in a really sedative state like your permanently fixed up on the drugs they usually prescribe to the mental patients. Essential it just kills who you are, rather then actually killing you.

Leo came back from being crazy in the last 10 mins of the movie when he had the flashback of what exactly went on that day when he came home from work. He no longer repressed the fact that his wife murdered his kids and that he killed his wife. He accepted the truth. However, the whole point of him going crazy in the first place was so that he didn't have to live knowing that he was indirectly responsible for killing his children (by not getting his wife help) and that he shot his wife. He wanted to live as if he was after someone else responsible for his wifes death.

While in his loony world where he tries to expose the mental institution, Leo is living his life as a good man. One who did no wrong, and is just trying to expose the corrupt. However, when he comes back to reality, he sees that he views himself as being a monster (murdered his wife and indirectly children). So at the end when talking to his psychiatrist after asking that question (referred to in other posts), he gets up to willingly walk with the caregivers to receive his treatment, because he would rather get the treatment to wipe out who he really is (a monster) so that he doesn't have to live the rest of his life knowing what really happened when he got home from work.

Again, this is how i understood the ending, but i hope that cleared things out for you...

I watched the previews and i'm like wow...this is going to be a great horror flick...for some reason the only horror flicks that scares me are the ones involving mental patients...pretty disappointed...not sure what's wrong with you guys but 1/4 way through the movie i knew that this was going to be a "6th sense" ending where bruce willis wasn't who he thought he was...

with that said, that summed up the whole movie for me as i knew what was going to happen...so i didn't enjoy it as much...i wouldn't say it's a bad movie, just not that great...again, the trailer is NOTHING like the movie...

Did anyone read the book? I haven't seen the movie but was talking to a girl last night who saw it and complained a lot about the "unanswered questions" in the movie, all of which are answered in the book. For example in the book Laeddis IS Teddy. It is the persona he created to deal with the guilt of killing his family. Therefore Teddy actually was the one who has beaten Noyce within an inch of his life. This among other things I don't know if are covered in the movie but are in the book.

Yup. Everything seemed answered by credits, can't think of anything left unanswered.

Pretty good movie. I went and saw it even after hearing from a friend that it was poor. Glad I did because it was totally my type of flick. Big
