What have they done to F1? Strategy no more

F1 used to be about:
1. Car
2. Driver
3. Strategy

It is obvious that with the new changes to the regulations, there is no more strategy of any kind... I think 2 stops are a thing of the past.. Even though the commentators kept wondering if some of the front runners who started on softs will make a 2nd stop for fresh softs towards the end of the race, it was obvious that it is not even a question anymore... Even if they could be running 3 seconds a lap faster at the end with light fuel and fresh soft tyres, they would fall back a few places and could never make up the positions...
Moot point really... I hope I am wrong, but it seems the races will all look like this: Top cars start on softs to ensure good quali position, wait until first car stops, check the difference performance of the tyres relative to your own car, dive to the pits for hard tyres, go the rest of the way...

How could they completely take away all strategy like that???

because in the past...we're all bitching all the overtaking were done in pit strategy and no on track overtaking actions....

so the FIA just simply banned refuelling without adjusting tire use and qualify format.

as the result, the FASTEST driver will go into Q3 and in top 3 position....then everyone fuel up to max and race, but faster drivers can still be faster than people behind with same fuel load...and everyone MUST use both compounds of tire....so as long as the fast driver are able to make up certain margin....he can go ahead, pit and comfortably cruise to the end.....

First thing need to adjust, tire use, drivers who got knocked out in Q1 and Q2 does not necessary to use BOTH compounds of tires....i.e. slower drivers can drive harder without pit stops....thus they can save about 20 seconds in one race....
or this change can be post throughout the grid...so drivers and teams and option to use softer coupound for a faster Q3 time but need to slow down to preserve the tires for the entire race...or use a harder compound but result a P8-P10 but save themselves for a 20 second pit stop bogey time.

Also the qualifying format has to be adjusted....from what I see for those who knocked out in Q1 and Q2....they are hopeless to catch up.....first...they have a heavy car, they MUST pit to meet regulations for using BOTH tire compounds....

my point is....FIA cannnot just blindly ban refuelling and hoping for more action. This will just cause the fast ones to be in the front, and tie up the hands on everyone behind them...some rules must be adjusted accordingly....

I like the idea of Q1 and Q2 drivers not being required to use both compounds
That could be interesting... If things do not change, this season is shaping up to be the biggest disappointment ever after all the hype in the off season

Here is the latest word,

One suggestion, which was raised by McLaren's Whitmarsh, is that all teams be forced to make two pit stops, thereby encouraging drivers to push harder without the fear of ruining their tyres before they get a new set.

This idea has been backed by Red Bull's Christian Horner. "I think the problem, with the way the format of the races are, is that you are in danger of one stop races at all events.

"I think we should consider whether we do two mandatory stops. It seems ridiculous that the guys train like hell for one stop."

He added: "We've only had one snapshot today, so perhaps we should review it after the first three or four races. Everybody thought I didn't want it because of tyre degradation, but I think we have shown today that tyre degradation isn't a problem for Red Bull."


This could be a good solution too

This could be a good solution too
I like this approach.

E90SLAM's suggestion is OK but one thing I could see possibly happening with that is a fast driver gets knocked out of Q2 on purpose so that he can rock the soft tires all race. An Alonso or Vettel would easily catch the front runners in this situation. Then again...that cold be good. Seeing someone come from mid pack, passing everyone, to challenge the leader by the last 1/4 of the race...hmmm......

Possible, but soft tires as we know "normally" will degrade fast and won't hold for entire 300km race....my intent was to allow slower drivers to have an option not to pit and catch up with the faster drivers....

Of coz, enforcing two pit stops is pretty good idea as well....

Pit/Fuel strategy was one the best things about F1. Only moron Nascar fans complained about there being no passing.

Agree, I miss that too....just love the wise engineers in the back calculating fuel consumption, tire degradation, pace, traffic, track position, and original strategy discussed before the race and kept adjusting...

They always try to find the best combination from above....
