TD Bank WTF?
So when you look at you bank statement online there is a section that says available balance. Don't you guys think that this "available" balance should be well available and ready to use? Apparently TD Bank doesn't. I deposited 500 into my account on Friday and I got a slip telling me that my Available balance was....I know it takes 1 business day to post. Anyway I transferred some to my savings when I got home and then bought a zenclosures box and a roll of cf vinyl so I can wrap my roof. TD bank decided to post my transactions first then my deposit on Tuesday even though I deposited it first. I short I got charged 175 for overdrafting even though I had it tied to my Savings account so I don't get charged for overdrafting. They only refunded me 105 because they said "the computer did it." That's great so you're going to charge me 175 when I had the funds and then only refund me 105 because your computer made a mistake. TD Bank, I hate you.

They should have a current balance, which tells you how much is in your account, and an available balance telling what you can use of the current balance. On the bright side, my zenclosures box comes in tomorrow along with the 3M CF vinyl.

Chase does the same damn thing.
I just got hit with almost $200 overdraft fees (for $4 at starbucks, $10 parking, couple of subway lunches and a few other insignificant purchases), while my $250 *cash* deposit was being held up! When I called, I got exact same answer: "Sir, I apologize for the inconvenience, but our computer system is highly intelligent and rarely makes mistakes. At this time we will not be able to help you. Sorry." Yes... it is highly intelligent at ripping off customers. Closing my account tomorrow (after my paycheck gets direct deposited) and going to a local credit union. Fuck Chase....

PSECU never does this. The current balance is what is in your account - which may or may not be tied up in pending transactions. The available is what is ready to be spent right this second. When I deposit checks or cash at certain brands of ATM, the money is available for withdrawal immediately. Love them.

I imagine CU in the end of PSECU is credit union...if so, I would just say that I have found my credit union to be way better than any other bank where I've had an account. If something like this happens, the fees are much more reasonable, and they seem to be more willing to work with you.

PSECU is the Pennsylvania State Employees' Credit Union. Only PA employees or their family members can join..but I'm sure there are other CUs out there that are as good.

Hope they're as good to you as PSECU has been to me. Car loans, personal loans, free checking, you name it...never any hassle.

My debit/credit card automatically adds whatever funds to my "current available balance" due to there being a line of credit attached to the card. If I go over, it just than becomes a credit purchase vs. an overdraft. No problems thus far.

oh and FYI, online purchase holds last longer than any, set up an "online purchasing" checking account so it doesnt affect your real checking account, just deposit as needed when ordering

I really don't notice holds on my card when doing online purchases, but I tend to stick with major retailers.

This is the new game banks are playing since they got themselves into so much debt. The people getting hit with these fees are the ones who usually can not afford it in the first place and who carry minimum balances in their account. If you are living pay check to pay check or only put in your checking enough to cover your checks you are going to get hit with these fees.
The only way to deal with it is to change banks to a small local bank they seem not to be doing this. Only once did I have this happen to me. Deposit a large check from my investment account to use as a down payment on a house. Waited until I saw the funds were drawn from my investment account then proceed to write the deposit check. Well the bank hit me for all kinds of fee because it was not the 10 days they said they required for out of state checks, even though the drew out the funds from my investment account 2 days after I deposit the check and the fund showed up in my checking account on the 3 day. Well called the branch office President (this was when each main branch had a president) Got into it with him and show him they had my money on the second day and they wanted to hold it for another 8 days while they collect interest on it. Well he finally agreed to credit my account. I got my just rewards when I sold my property and a huge amount got deposited into my account and they saw it and he calls me up and tried to convince me to put it into a CD or something. At that time I reminded him about our previous conversation and proceed to ask him to prepare to close my account since I no longer wanted to do business with a bank or does not realize who's money they were messing with.
