430EX reviews?
Hi guys, I recently shot a wedding for a friend using my XSi. They didn't want to hire a pro photographer so I volunteered to take pictures of their wedding using what I have - XSi, 18-55mm and 55-250 lenses.
I had some trouble with the built in flash: after 5-6 shots, I got the blinking "BUSY" message and I couldn't take another picture for about 10-15 seconds. It doesn't sound very long, but 15 seconds is a VERY long time when you're trying to capture a moment, not to mention embarrassing - "Ready, 1,2,.... Doh! Hold that pose, I didn't get it..." In the end, they were happy with the photos, but I know I could've done a bit better if I had a separate flash. I've been doing some research and it looks like the 430EX would fit the bill. It's a bit expensive, though I guess I should've known what I was getting into with a photography hobby Any thoughts? Also, any recommendations on a polarizing filter? Thanks for any input. |

I have the 430EX and love it...reason #1 I got it used for cheap($150 with diffuser and lightsphere). 2. it's a good compromise between function, size and cost.
I'm not sure you can get the 430EX anymore, I believe they have the 430EXII then the step up is the 580. There's one thing I I wish it had though...can not function as a master, aside from that it's nice

one more thing...always carry extra set of fresh batteries with you at all times...one's the battery drains, you'll be waiting far the cap to charge for 10-15 seconds

I love my 430 EXII as well. The pictures come out much better than the built in flash on the XSi. It doesn't do that stupid metering where it'll flash 3 times before it takes the picture. I hated that so much. I also wish I could use it as a Master but oh well.

I like to blind people with my 430EXII. lol I don't use it that much but am happy with it when I do (not that I fully get how to set it all the time). Also, I shoot mostly wide/super wide angle so the stock flash is partially blocked by my lens so I kinda need an external flash sometimes.
I don't shoot weddings or whatnot so I don't know if a 580 would be more useful if you're in a larger venue. Overall, though, I'm satisfied with what I have.....for now. Damn photography money pit! lol

khaye1, what do you mean by master/slave? Is that if you set up multiple flash modules away from the camera? I don't know if I'll be doing much (if any) of that, so I guess that's not a deal breaker.
inabis, I always wondered what that was... It's good to know it doesn't do that though since that's probably another reason why it has to recharge so much. bosstones, I hear you about the money pit, i've been wanting to get that 50mm lens and the 18-200mm lens for more versatility. I guess I'll stick with the 430 for now. Looks like I can get it for around $225 on ebay using the 8% Bing cashback right now so at least it's some savings. Thanks for the feedback. |

Check around on craigslist, too. Or even reputable stores that sell used or refurb'd equipment (Calumet, B&H, etc...). No shame in some used equip and you can save yourself some cash, too. I scored my 10-22mm lens 'cause a friend could no longer use it since he stepped up to a 5D. The lens was only a few months old. I also scored my 430EXII when Circuit City was closing and got a good deal on a new one.

yup that would be it...no biggie though. If you decide to get into off camera flash later on you can always buy flash triggers.
