Thoughts on Directv?

I'm thinking about switching from cable.

I have it and I liked it! I havn't had cable in about 10 years or so! One gripe though, the local channels are not sent in HD. ( I think they are working on it though) I live out in the country so I can't pick up off-air broadcast, so I can't see network shows like the office, and smallville in HD! Kinda Bugs me. But I think they have plans to add them soon.

On quality, Picture is good, I rarely loose my signal, even when it is storming, if there is something in the line of sight of the dish (a tree, neighbors house, ect) It might be a problem!

Whatever you do, make sure you get TiVo (DVR). I think that I have had fewer outages on DirecTV than cable. The image quality is more consistent on satellite (but I was on analog cable, not digital cable) with no interference from local broadcast channels.

All my recievers are TiVos! 2 of them are HD TiVos too, Those are Great if you have HD tv's!!!

I think you can get DirecTV from AT&T for free for a year. After that you have to commit to an 18 month suscription at $35/mo (I think). That works out to about $21 a month over 2.5 years.

I have DirecTV with an HD DVR unit and I am very pleased with it so far. I did try to talk to my cable company, but after three different calls with three different people, the last quite ignorant, I got fed up and went to satellite.

The picture is nice, but I can still see compression artifacts. Some HD channels, like Discovery have pretty nice HD content, but other channels suffer from macroblocking during action scenes.

But hey, now I can watch House in HD on a night I don't work late!

Yep, Fox, CBS, NBC, and ABC all come in HD for me. I get the SD and the HD channels. This actually led to confusion because I accidentally DVR's the last SD broadcast of House. I have since rectified it. Now I can see how old our local weatherman really is. I think he helped to invent weather.

You can just have them install one of those antennas to pick up your local HD channels. I have Directivo HD and I have no complaints.

Heres a little hint for all SAT tv users, do a search on FTA, or check out dssrookie.com Basiclly if you already have a sat dish set up, all you need to do is buy a reciever off ebay (i use viewsat xtreme) for about $150-$200, and download the new data file off that site and upload it to the reciever, and BAM every channel you ever wanted, ohh and it gets better, you can call and cancel your sat subscription
