Back in undergrad my school was working on RFID security technology. I believe they set one up on campus and stole a bunch of stuff. Just to prove a point. You think taking CC #'s are scary, pace makers work with RFID chips for reprogramming.

I thought that they were going to use RFID Technology in grocery stores. Basically you would just take your groceries and walk out the door as a RFID scanner just scans for any RFID's on the packages and charges it to your CC.

I thought it was a good idea...

I dont think that will ever work. Considering its pretty easy to block RFID signals, it would be easy to walk out with a cart full of unpaid groceries. Or booze. Or whatever.

No. RFID chips have been in CCs long before paypass existed.

I have 1 card with an RFID in it. my Amex blue. I also hardly ever use it, so any transactions will stick out like a sore thumb to Amex.

Amex is good about stuff anyway. You're always right with them. Its my preferred card.

I remember when Mythbusters was going to do a show about RFID security the lawyers from Mastercard, American Express, and Texas Instruments threatened to sue them and Discovery Channel into oblivion, so they canceled their plans... RFID security is a joke

Security is a profitable industry when it comes to RFID tech, although I dont think anybody has come up with a cheap enough way to make it work yet.

Personally, I think it will take a murder for any real regulations to be put in place.

i hear walmart was trying to impliment using RFID to help keep track of inventory. one of my friends who's in supply chain management always raves about RFID.

I could definitely see it for inventory tracking, but not for point of sale applications.

Wireless barcode processing and all that seems to be the current trend for warehouse tracking at large corporations.

None of my CC have RFID for this exact reason, I never like the paypass idea, I like to know what I am running my card through. I am starting to get to the point where I do not like giving my card to waiters or waitresses, I have seen where more card information was stolen by these people work at restaurants.

If you are scared...

Option 1: take a small drill bit and drill out the RFID chip in the CC. It's much easier to do on the AMEX blue card because it is clear, but they all should be in the same location and you could see a dent where the chip's at.

Option 2: Buy a shielded wallet or a shielded card sleeve. They are made just to block RFID.

Option 3: call you CC company and ask for a non RFID card. If they don't have it, cancel and get one without it.
