What does semi-formal mean?
If you're going to a holiday party/company party and it says semi-formal, what do you wear? I looked it up and it says usually a suit but I would like to get other opinions. I don't want to under dress and especially don't want to OVER dress. Thanks guys!!

semi is what you would wear to a high school homecoming
either black or khaki pants with a nice button down or dress shirt for formal I would think of a suit or prom attire. |

Wear a suit with a belt, if you find yourself overdressed, take off your jacket. If your boss is a guy, and he takes off his jacket, then you can take off yours.

Also, both my signature and avatar are technically semi-formal attire, but you shouldn't have to wear a tuxedo or dinner jacket, and probably won't be expected to. A nice black suit should do. To clarify my last post a bit... If alcohol is to be served at this party, then often times through the course of the evening people start to loosen up. When the big boss takes off his coat, it's a good sign you should too.

EDIT: Semi formal will mean slightly different things depending on where you are going, in other words, whose interpretation. Take that into consideration. |

Thanks for the replies guys! I guess I will wear a suit then. I was actually thinking of wearing jeans and a blazer. However, I looked it up and it said suit and most of you seem to think suits are the way to go. I have nice black pinstripe suit that I just got recently. I suppose I can wear that.

It also depends where in the country you are.
Here in the Southwest semi-formal is what skinnycow mentioned, dress shirt and jeans. Formal means dress shirt, jeans and a bolo ![]() |

semi casual usually means business casual. Slacks, Collared shirt. Throw in a sport coat or blazer if you want to take it a step above and dress more nicely than the crowd.

I guess suit it is. It's gonna be at some mansion so the decor is pretty formal feeling. I figured most people will be in semi-formal attire so I will wear a suit and take off the jacket if it's too much.
