Hi guys. I have a poor man question to Scott. Really 3 cyl fwd car is just a 1/2 of normal 6 cyliners 3 series car, am I right ?
Question is: Will we have to pay HALF price of the previous car for this handicapped half-premium 3 cyl thing now ? |

At least BMW will be able to make their fleet average over 30 mpg with these FWD vehicles that every housewife (no offence) will want- because of the BMW logo. That is their goal with these concepts.
What'll most likely happen for the rest of us, at least in the US, is that there will probably be a gas guzzler tax for cars that get less than 30 mpg. We'll still be able to get RWD/ 250+ hp, but we'll be making the gov't richer. But I guess I'd rather die broke and happy versus rich and bored. |

Its not just a question of housewives, unfortunately I bet a decent percentage of BMW drivers dont know their cars are rear driven. How many company car drivers in M Sport kitted 520D's actually know they are RWD.......or more importantly CARE either way. Us enthusiasts do but lets be honest, many BMWs are driven by image concious users rather than true enthusiasts. As for the gas guzzler tax I imagine youll get it in the US at some point, it already exists in the UK as a 'showroom tax' based on the CO2 rating of your cars. Thankfully its rolled up into the sale price so its not too obvious but its there all the same. |

Actually, I have no idea how JB's post was a response to mine... I was arguing that a company that turns over tens of billions of euros knows what it needs to do to sell cars and meet future E & E targets (in order to stay in business and remain profitable), and also that a FWD car in the line-up will not have any affect on the RWD models in the line-up.... He was arguing that the Germans are better at designing, building and marketing cars than the British are... I think we're on the same side? |

Not so. In order to leverage similar parts between platforms, BMW will have to compromise between the FWD and RWD platforms to fit identical parts. This is necessary to compete with VW/Audi that share identical parts.

The FWD BMW and Mini will share the same platform, the rest of BMW-lines will be RWD so dont worry. They will just be in addition to the RWD lineup.

How did you find the time to also sell TVR off to the Russians before putting half of Blackpool out of work?? With the way suspension technology takes pace Im not sure a FWD BMW in a number of years will be the horrendous prospect it sounds like right now. If it happens Ill mourn the loss of RWD as much as any BMW enthusiast but FWD can be made fun. In my younger days I had a range of cars from a Peugeot 106 Rallye, 106 GTi, 306 GTI-6, 306 Rallye, Ford Focus RS, Alfa Romeo 147 GTA 3.2 and Renault Clio Williams and they were all hoots to drive.

Driving From The Front
Here is the face to the new BMW Compact.
The new BMW 1er Coupe and Cabrio will get something similiar which takes the car back to it's 2002 origins. The single light is accomodated by three LED bars at the side of the main unit for increased illumination. BMW's evolved from single headlights to two. The design in real life , actually works quite well and gives the car a very unique identity.
