Filling Brita water filters
For those of you that have them, do you fill it with cold water, or hot water?
Im wondering which one you think works with the filters better. Any chemical engineers out there?

Well, I'd imagine you're drinking cold water.
Just turn on the sink faucet and filler up, and stick it in the fridge. I wouldn't use hot water, simply because it's all plastic parts. I hate the damn things though, so much hassle. I enjoy the water filtered straight out the door on the fridge. |

I just read their FAQ and learned something new.
"Note: DO NOT USE HOT WATER (max = 85°F/29°C, min = 32°F/0°C). Use with cold water only."

cold water only... heat often causes nonspontaneous reactions to react spontaneously...

haha just use cold water. i dont know the specifics of what reacts... i guess its just a precaution so you dont end up creating compounds that could escape the filter and enter your drinking water in the pitcher. i'm using a britafilter pitcher right now for water used for cooking... but if im thirsty i usually drink bottled water even though it may be more expensive.
if you need hot water (for tea/coffe/etc?), i think i'd be better just to get one of those kettles and boil the water that has been filtered. my water is probably alot worse than yours, mine conducts electricity... and rather well i might add.

I think that hot water ruins the activated carbon filter stuff.
I got really tired of the Brita and Pur water filters. Last year I changed out to an under counter reverse osmosis system. It works great! The water tastes better than ever, the tea kettle doesn't get any scaly buildup at all, the espresso maker doesn't get clogged up.... I tapped into it as the filter for my refrigerator water as well. No more changing filters in the refrigerator any more. The capacity of the RO system is much better too. It has a holding tank so you actually get really good flow when you turn on the drinking water faucet. |

The membrane filter shouldn't need to be changed unless you don't change your carbon filters often enough. It was easier to install than I thought it would be. Home Depot offers their installers, but I am a little bit of a DIYer and would rather pocket the savings. I don't remember what I spent. It was less than $200 or $300 dollars. An extra set of filter elements was something like $70 for all three (it may have been a bit more than that, and the RO replacement will probably not need to be used). |
