Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Nobody should be surprised that they get arrested after the cops tell them to knock it off, and they continue anyway.

I feel like it's only going to get worse.

That's why they call it law enforcement.

The dancers would have been better off in practicing civil disobedience by not resisting arrest, but to challenge the arrest in court. Though they would have a better case, it would be far less likely to get play on youtube.
This kind of law goes too far. If there is a law against dancing, it should be no more serious than a parking ticket. The cops should just hand out dancing citations. |

Reverse psychology was needed. Tell the hippies if they stand still and be quiet they will be arrested. They obviously wanted to do the opposite of what the cops told them to do.

Is there a law about not dancing there? If we just let cops "enforce" whatever they want to we would all be screwed.

The cops are just caught enforcing an "unpopular" law/ordinance/regulation and because most people in this country have no idea of how anything in the legislative/judicial system etc. actually works, they just blame it on the cops and assume they are enacting their own police state on a whim. To answer your question, yes, there is a regulation. I posted this earlier ITT: http://adwww2.americanbar.org/SCFJI/...rm.aspx?ID=464

Try google first. Or you could have clicked on two links that point you directly to the law.

Just another example of government finding a way control things which they do not like. As the law states this was done because the supreme court obviously did not like the fact that people demonstrate outside the building after they render unpopular rulings, so they managed to make grounds which are public since you and I payed for them as not really public so you are not allow to express your feeling on certain property. So when is public property not public property when it not in the best interest of the government. |

Just so people know, whether it was a law or not, police can pretty much detain and arrest you for no apparent reason other than them thinking you are doing something wrong. Then it is up to lawyer and court to decide if the police were right. Most places the police can not be bother with things like this, they have more important things to do, however, when you have police with nothing better to do they can find any number of reasons to make your life hell and cost you big money to undo their mess. Everything else would be sorted out later at the arraignment. The accused will be brought in front of a neutral magistrate and told what he/she is charged with.

I hate bully cops as much as anyone else, but IMO these officers tried to be as reasonable as possible, but at a certain point, they have to enforce the law. No sympathy for these hippie demonstrators and their childish antics.
As for the law itself, maybe it seems silly, but then again, how cool would you guys be if I rolled up to the Jefferson Memorial and started breakdancing in the middle of the floor or grinding up against one fo the walls? Wouldn't it be just a bit disrespectful to call attention to myself in that way inside a national monument honring one of this nation's founding fathers?
