The whole point of warranty is to cover your ass when a product malfunction happens.

It costed 6k to do full replacement by BMW. I'm glad they took the tab. How would u feel if they would bring you the bill to take your baby home which is 3 months old only.
Your repair was covered by the new car warranty, because it was due to a MANUFACTURING DEFECT. This change to the maintenance plan coverage has zero bearing on that situation.

If your clutch had failed at 49,000 miles in the 48th month due to a manufacturing defect it still would be replaced under the new car warranty.

Little things like that have an enormous psychological effect and destroys loyalty. Not worth it in my opinion. Studies show you will probably lose money in the long run having to recruit, retrain and loss of efficiency as a result. With BMW, there is no doubt in my mind they WILL lose customers as a result.
OK...to who? Audi? Jag? Lexus? MB? Porsche? They all have 4yr/50k maintenance...don't they?

Maybe we should watch for spike in sales in 2017 for people entering the GENNY ZONE.

I also tend to think people confuse the offerings from BMW in terms of Warranty/Service and Maintenance and tend use the terms interchangeably.

CPO is Certified Pre-Owned, it's a program a dealership can elect to put a used vehicle through before it's sold to a new owner. CPO "extends" the factory warranty by 2yrs/50k miles (for 6yrs/100k miles) from the date of original sale (commonly called the "In-Service Date"). It also will extend the BMW Assist safety services for an extra 2yrs. However, CPO coverage is *NOT* the same as factory warranty coverage, for example, navigation systems aren't covered by CPO.

CPO Warranty

ESC is an Extended Service Contract, it's a program where an owner of a vehicle (new or used) can purchase from BMW. There's varying levels on coverage (PowerTrain Plus, Gold and Platinum) and varying levels of duration (5/6/7yrs).

Gold is similar to CPO, Powertrain covers just drive components and Platinum covers most everything.

CPO Wrap is an ESC for CPO'd vehicles where you can elect to upgrade/extend your CPO coverage (i.e. upgrading from 6 to 7 years, or upgrading to Platinum).

ESC and CPO Wrap Information

Maintenance Plan is just a maintenance contract which extends the "free maintenance" during the 4yr/50k factory warranty to 6yr/100k. It's separate from any CPO or ESC agreements with BMW. Of source, it covers brakes, oil changes, air filter, etc.

When did BMW originally up the maintenance from 3/36 to 4/50? 2003?

This is a major difference for serial owners like myself and, indeed, my entire family. Collectively we own 12 BMWs among 7 individuals. Thought I love the driving dynamics of BMWs, I would be forced to look at other brands if the free maintenance went entirely away.

Yeah, I've had 8 since 2006. Other than when my wife crunched up one of her X5's the maintenance difference might cover a nice dinner out. Happy you got yours covered before the impending apocalypse.

In either 2002, 2003, or 2004. Still 3/36 in 2001. On my 2004 it was 4/50.

BMW definitely has shareholders, it is a public company.

I think this is why they have the sales crown. Watch Audi, esp with the VW cluster F, put something like free maintenance in place to get customers and the sales crown back.

whadda yall think?

I agree with this. The brake maintenance is the main thing that made BMW's plan stand out for the majority of people.

I don't believe any Hyundai has as good of maintenance program as BMW's new reduced program.

Looks like BMW's is the second best offered (after Cadillac) - http://static.ed.edmunds-media.com/u...le.maint.5.pdf

Then -
http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/ar...-worth-it.html

Looks like Cadillac's program is now the best.

Amazes me that anyone would need brakes or a clutch at less than 50k miles.

Cadillac's plan may now be longer, but it's not better. Its maintenance coverage is much more limited than BMW's.

FYI - I still really pissied that a honda civic for 16K comes with cameras and a 70K M3 does not, this is just bull load of stuff.
BMW has NOT made the new car warranty non-transferable.

I think you had the wrong person! I didn't have any clutch problems! . Or any problems actually...... Been pretty lucky.

I for one am ok with the change as it doesn't really affect me, I buy the cars but even with the free maintenance have yet to ever get a break job before 60k miles and the wiper blades I get for super cheap with my account anyhow. I change them every 2 years and the only real loss is the engine oil but like I said before, I'll just negotiate that out of what bottom dollar I pay for the car. .

In the U.S. Audi has never even been close to the crown.

So basically they're just covering leased cars?

Brakes are a massive expense...truly sad to hear they're doing away with covering those.

No. Plus Audi offers Audi care, but that costs money. If I'm reading the original post correctly, BMW appears to be offering similar packages (they already do anyway).

I also find it amusing. The people threatening to leave, where would you go? As far as free maintenance goes BMW (and I think now Cadillac) pretty much offer the best scheduled maintenance perks, even after the change starting in MY 2017.

Do all of you really just base your car purchase based on free maintenance?

If you're choosing your car over Maintenace you're not an enthusiast.

Audi's customer service blows. They treat you like you bought a VW.(which you did)

And I like I just said if you're buying a car over a Maintenace program you should probably just buy a Ford or Chevy.

So this will add a ton of profit to M cars as I highly doubt they will lower the price to offset the brakes not being included now (that's a huge cost savings for BMW).

I can't be the only one that factored the 4 years 50,000 mile free maintenance (including brakes) into the cost of buying, on the M3 that is at least a $3,000 savings, just look at what they charge for the 2 year extended free maintenance ($3500!), obviously the huge cost in this is the brakes!
