Indeed, the ship is sinking and all the rats are trying to make off with what they can.

I'm officially on an island now, the only southern means of egress out of the Kingwood area was the bridge over the San Jacinto river, which is tremendously overflowed its banks due to the release of water up river at Lake Conroe.

This was taken by me at the nearest overpass at about 5PM this evening:

Same overpass, 5 hours later at about 10PM, while public works was starting to drag out barrier to block the freeway. They told me they had no idea when to expect it to reopen, and were going to officially close it down as soon as the far left lane was no longer passable.

I'll just chill at the house, WAMFW.

I'm officially an island dweller now, yesterday at 5PM, and this morning at 8AM. IH59 facing south bound, the only way out is now well under water.

That's insane. How do you still have power?

"CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley declared a state of emergency on Tuesday and ordered an evacuation of more than a million people in coastal areas starting Wednesday afternoon in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew."
I think what many people don't understand about this situation is that the area of the Texas coast where the hurricane made landfall was evacuated. Hundreds of thousands of people from Corpus Christi, Rockport, Port Aransas, etc...all left as instructed. Houston is over 200 miles from where the storm hit!

Not to mention...

Quote:
As Hurricane Harvey floods the greater Houston area, people are asking, why didn’t Houston evacuate?

Houston has a history of flooding. A thunderstorm that last a full day is enough to flood certain areas. Predictions said Harvey was going to stall. From there, forecasters were not sure what was going to happen. Even if forecasters did not know where Harvey was going after landfall, one thing was for sure, Houston was going to flood.

So, why not call for an evacuation?

The question we need to ask, where are the four million people of Harris county supposed to go? Rather than four million, let’s say one million people needed to evacuate. Where are one million people supposed to find shelter, eat, sleep… everything we do in our daily lives.

Hotels are out of the question. The flooding could continue for days; people may be out of their homes for weeks. Chances are, the vast majority of people evacuating can not afford to stay in a hotel for a week, or two weeks, much less pay for their food.

Set up a shelter? We have shelters large enough for a million people? We would need a 1,000 shelters holding 1,000 people each just to house a quarter of the people in Harris county. Dallas is setting up a mega shelter that will house an estimated 5,000 people. To shelter just a quarter of people in Harris County, we would need 200 of these “mega shelters”.

We have not mentioned the people in Galveston, Dickinson, Victoria or all the other places affected by Hurricane Harvey.
This country's emergency response "team" (made up of 100's of organizations, paid and volunteer) is but just a a single hurricane from being taxed beyond it's capabilities. What it boils down to in the end, once a natural or man made disaster reaches a certain point, the safety and security of you and your family is your responsibility. This is why governments put out PSAs asking everyone to be prepared for such an event. "Have an evacuation plan, don't wait for mandatory evacuation." "Have food and water stored for your family." "Fill your car's gas tank, fill gas cans, etc..." There's nothing we or our government can do to avoid natural disasters. All we can do is be prepared and act accordingly. And of course offer assistance and prayers to those who don't have the means to properly prepare for the worst.

Look at Matthew, people were evacuated from coastal areas in Florida, Georgia all the way up to the Carolinas.

I can only imagine the number of flooded BMWs that are going to find their way from Houston to used car lots in other areas of the country.

I realize people can be idiotic, but earlier I saw a video of idiots stealing TVs, and basically plain old looting. Is this stuff edible, I mean for a few possible dollars that this stuff is worth, I fail to understand the rationale. Food and water, I could understand. And these idiots wonder why life is so hard; maybe they make it so?

Can't look at any more pics or CNN. All the networks are showing coverage nonstop and I feel like they're trying to outdo each other for ratings. Especially the weather Channel. I'm breaking out my checkbook to write a big fat one to the Red Cross.

Edit: the inter-webs are saying don't donate to Red Cross because Houston will never see the money. They suggest finding grassroots organizations. But I have a feeling scammer as well get a hold of that real quick. Does anyone have any suggestions especially peoplefrom Texas/Houston?

Concerning donations, keep in mind that animal shelters will need help as well for all of the displaced and rescued pets. I plan on making a donation to the Humane Society.

According to media reports it sounds like the price gouging has started. Coming soon... unlicensed scumbag contractors. Amazing how disasters like these bring out the best in some people and the worst in others.

Fuck the contractors, anyone can build a house but there has to be a way to make the living hell for people who exploit people in need, especially on a crisis zone like Texas is now.

We all have read the stories of those people who have taken their own boats out to help others, people have brought food and supplies to the shelters, the picture of a cop sleeping on the floor because he worked till he dropped are the things to remember, the people to be. Then some fucking idiot goes and uses the disaster to make a buck.

Argh!

Homeowners with flood damage have to really worry about mold / contractor they use. Covering over and painting mold doesn't make it go away. The good contractors will be overwhelmed with business and unfortunately others will arrive from all over to take advantage of desperate homeowners and small business owners.

Also, everyone in the market for a used car needs to be aware of thousands of cars that were flooded will inevitably be circulating in coming months / years.
