I flew a similar route as a passenger on a C-141A cargo back in '69. We took off from Tinker AFB in Oklahoma and landed at Elmendorf AFB near Anchorage. There was a crew change and refueling, then launched for Japan. I think we landed at Yokota AFB, but not sure. Same procedure there, then launched for Bien Hoa AFB. That was quite an airplane for it's time.
PS for flybigjet: Son flies A320's for United. He sends me similar pictures. :-)

When they converted them into the -B model (installing aerial refueling capability and adding a 13' and 10' fuselage plug) they didn't even change the thrust on the motors-- it was *that* overpowered. It's been called the "Life-Sucking-Tube-Of-Pain" and the "StarLizard" (when they stretched them, they painted them in green camo-- it *did* sort of look like a lizard. My dad flew both -A's and -B's-- all I wanted out of Pilot Training was one to McChord (near Tacoma), but life didn't quite work out that way-- I ended up flying the StarLizard's bigger brother for 27 years. Where does your kid fly out of? R. |

And that's great about your son-- getting hired by the Majors can be a trick. I'm based in Denver on the Guppy, so I've been in those sims a few hundred times..... Here's the "old" (NG) vs. "new" (Max) Guppy instrument display..... |

^^ Nice! I think United has something like 94 Max's on order and it appears they are at the front of the line.
Was the "StarLizard's" big brother the C-5? I will never forget the day we flew out of Tinker AFB. We were among thirteen 6-man teams that convoyed to Tinker from Ft. Sill, OK. Not coincidentally, there were thirteen C-141A's waiting for us on the ramp. Each team had one jeep, one 3/4 ton and one deuce & a half truck, plus trailer and our radar system. Amazingly, all that fit into the C-141! I do recall all of the chains, diagonal and whatever, holding those mothers to the deck. I made it a point to sit in all 3 vehicles while we were cruising along at about 35,000 feet, just to say I did it. Heh! It was kind of noisy in the cargo area, so the flight crew took pity on us and let us spend a little time on the flight deck. As I recall, it was pretty roomy up front. After we eventually landed at Bien Hoa AFB, our very green 2nd Lt. ordered us to load our M-16's while still inside the airplane. The crew chief countered that order in a nano second, explaining to the butter-bar that we were on a secure base. (That 2nd Lt. was relieved of command a month later for other malfeasance).

Yup. I flew The C-5 (or "Fred") for seven years in the Active Duty and 20 years in the Reserves.
I'd go back tomorrow-- it was that much fun. And yes, as a general rule, we never let live rounds be loaded in weapons in the aircraft (except for the Secret Service). Too much potential to put holes into surprisingly fragile pressurized metal tubes. R. |

Would love to get certified in Cyber Security, but work has been very busy so I haven't had the time to do my research on where to go to get certified.
