Fairness and balance needs to be matched with moderation of content to filter out hate and discriminatory content and I hope there are mechanisms to do this properly and that the new signups aren't loony types who let the system down.

I'm sure there will be mechanisms, but we also have to consider the term "hate speech" is about as misused/overused as the words "racism/racist/fascist". These days people label everything that challenges their views hate speech or racist.

I mentioned hate and discriminatory content. Most sensible people will get it. Behave online like you would behave in a roomfulI of people etc.
I'm not on social media enough to understand much of what you have observed but yeah being offended is ok but offending someone using a racial sexual or bodily characteristic they can't change is not ok. I guess mods here do a good job.

Im game. It's become basically one of two things:

a. faking your own life for a dopamine hit. Its all so cultivated and fake but people dont even admit it to themselves and it causes them to be depressed when they are comparing fake lives.
b. platform for spreading misinformation/social engineering.

All I would miss from facebook is a pretty decent way to centrally handle events, its all I ever use it for anymore.

The only reason I have FB is for Marketplace. I had a garage full of car parts that I wanted to sell and had no action on listings with other sites. A friend who knows I hate FB said to get it for that reason. Sure enough, I sold everything I wanted to in a month. Within 24 hours of listing an item I usually had two to three solid local offers. Hate em, but also hate to admit it works for some things.

I got a Twitter account to follow one guy because my daughter wanted a new XBox. That worked as well, I think I’ve Tweeted twice and both times were to a BP member that no longer posts here.

Other than that, agreed with the above, it just contributes to more noise of the negative side of society.

Because it has clearly migrated into politics and other threads have been shut down immediately when that happened. Respectfulness isn’t really a factor that seems to drive censorship decisions.

I obviously know that rule etc, but as you have seen (maybe not) there has been some leeway if it remains respectful. Once it turns it’s nuked pretty quickly.

Same experience here with selling and buying car (BMW) stuff.

Also my current BMW CCA chapter, and several other organizations I’m involved with, do ALL of their member communication via FB, so if I’m not on there, I don’t know what the groups are doing, where they’re meeting, etc. Frustrating but that’s how they choose to do it.

I am not FB friends with a dozen people; anyone I know and care about is in my contacts and reachable directly, as am I for them. I used to tell work colleagues that wanted to connect on LinkedIn that we were already in a network together, called work.

Yeah I guess Ive used that too. Bought a motorcycle in 2018 and then JUST sold one last week on it. Otherwise I havent really used it much, so dont know how much I would. I guess its better than craigslist.

Otherwise facebook destroyed all of its original value. I have been logging in recently for marketplace and events and I dont see anything from people I know anymore. They are just pushing those reels, which are obviously thirst traps and ads and data collection pages posting "content" that is obviously meant to snag older people to respond so they can data mine them.

Actually no, I haven’t had a BMW for so long I had gotten rid of all of my parts for them. But, I’ve seen them on there. I sold Toyota, Ford, Chevy and a couple of Porsche things IIRC.

Unfortunately my daughters hockey team uses it for some stuff as well. Since I’m one of the assistant coaches, I kind of have to check in on it from time to time. A mom livestreams our games for people that can’t make them and that is really cool. Also helps with coaching after the game for the players rewatching some specific plays etc.
