I'm told it's a nice lens, but a little on the soft focusing side, but definitely a good walk around with lots of range.

I didn't make that clear. I didn't get the lens. That's what I meant by "I don't care about that per se." I figure this guy bought a kit and sold the parts separately. Which is fine with me.

I took two identical shots, one with the 7D and one with the T1i. Both with the 35mm lens at F2, ISO100, and 1/125. These were shot just a few seconds apart (the time it took to swap the lens over). These are 640x480 100% crops. The T1i fares well against the 7D, but the 7D had lighter exposure for the same shot. Just a pixel number or pixel pitch thing?

more of a camera to camera thing.

you can take all the cameras you like and all the lenses you like, and you'll never find exact replicas of results.

I read something on this about lenses and apertures and ISO settings, etc. there's no such thing as perfect.

The 2 sensors are different designs from one another, the T1i, shared the same teck as the XS and XTI or whatever they were. the 7D is a newer sensor, this may just be the difference.

It could also be the different camera bodys focusing different. If you micro adjust the lens to the camera, you may get different results as well.

oh, one more thing, the 7D artificially can change the exposure from one spot on the picture to the other, depends what settings you have on. and I think this is why i'm seeing on second observation of the 2 pictures

look on your standard information page of the LCD beside where the focus type marker is (spot focus, evaluative metering, etc) and just to the right of it is what looks like a little person with the word "off" or 3 bars in the picture with the figure. this indicates how high the setting is, or if it is off.

turn it to off and take the same picture and see the results.

Wow, lots to learn with this beast. Just getting the focus points set to suit me will be some work. I'll be downloading the microfocus adjustment software soon as well. Then there's figuring out the flash transmitter. Oy.

once you figure out where stuff is, it's a really easy setup.

your focus points won't all be activated, so you'll have to go to the advanced functions menu (or whatever the one to the furthest right is)

find the C.FnIII menu then register all the functions

then when you press the point selector on the back of the camera, to actually change witch autofocus points are selected, you have to hit the M-Fn button beside the shutter release button to cycle through. I'm not sure why they did this, but it's what they did.

and for the flash, it's in the first menu under flash control, then go to "built-in flash settings" then down to wireles func. then choose how you want it fired.

On your 430ex turn on, then press and hold the ZOOM/Z button to activate slave.

and you're set.

the microadjustment is really the most painful part of it all. I haven't registered all my lenses yet

Just to add a personal point about the 7D, I shoot with that light controller thingy turned off most of the time. When it is activated and you need to shoot burst shots, it actually adds time for each image to process slowing down/ limiting your number of shots. Similar effects with long exposure noise reduction in the C.Fn menu.

(I should probably use it more now that I don't do as much sport stuff where I want the extra speed.)

Hassleblad's newest technology. they take their 50mp sensor and do a burst of 6 shots and stitch them together to make a 200 megapixel equivilent image.

If these are in-camera jpegs they don't mean a thing, other than the processors are programmed slightly differently for the different sensors. Shoot RAW and convert to jpegs with the same settings. Even if they're a little different, you can always adjust during RAW conversion.

The T2i shares the sensor with the 7D, but with the T1i I think that you have a higher pixel-pitch (larger pixels). Where the 7D shines is taking something very detailed and looking at it at 200%. It'll resolve more detail than most of Canon's other cameras.

Pretty impressive. At 500% the sand grains don't show any distortion or noise and real detail.

I suppose that we could do something similar by stacking our 5D MkII images, like the astrophotograpy guys do.

No, those were RAW files directly converted to JPEG with no adjustment. I could, of course, have evened out the exposure first, but my point was that they weren't evenly exposed despite identical settings. Not a big deal, really. Just an observation.
