So, serious question, have you seen the tv show "The Rookie"? It's set in LA. While I enjoy watching the show, I'm curious as to how realistic it would appear to actual police in California.

I agree with you 100%.

I haven't seen the show, but now I'll check it out and get back to you on it. I really like Chicago PD as a show.

I don't remember if this was asked before, but here goes...

Is playing "Paul Revere" and flashing one's headlights at oncoming traffic to alert them to a police enforcement zone considered free speech, a reason to pull over the driver, or even obstruction if you observe it?????

Lol! Now the Beastie Boys are stuck in my head.

I don't think anybody would really care one way or the other about the headlight flashing. You don't really see that too much anymore on California freeways with the advent of the internet and traffic apps like Waze, etc.

It is now a ticketable offense up here.

Seriously?!? I mean, I'm sure I could use 24401 CVC or 24409 CVC for that, but damn.....I wouldn't.

Which part is the violation? Flashing the high beams or notifying other drivers of police presence?

Well "Flash-to-Pass" is legal so it must be the notification somehow. What would that be defined as, some sort of obstruction? IDK.

I got pulled late 80's on a bridge over 495 doing that, and it was police coming the other way, and he turned around me and pulled me. I asked him what I did, and he said flashed my beams. I laughed....he wasn't amused so I told him I hit them by accident.

He let me go.

I'm going to have to check into this. Our CVC book is easily 2" thick, but maybe some tenured Motor officer might know where I can find a CVC about flashing specifically. The two CVC's I posted above are in reference to using brights when close to vehicles; I could articulate how flashing could impair the driver ahead.......but again, I wouldn't cite for simply flashing.

It has been found legal, as a 1A right of communication, sort of like using your horn.
But then, somehow, Virginia won't let you use radar detectors.

So just a few points. It is illegal to use high beams to oncoming traffic in Ontario, so a charges can be laid for that when flashing to warn of upcoming radar, although you almost never see anyone use their headlights to warn other drivers anymore. Radar detectors are illegal in Ontario, if you get caught with one the fine is high and the radar detector get's seized.

I wasn't aware that it was illegal to do that in Canada (I'm in the GTA now).

On bikes, it's a tap to the top of the head to warn other bikers

You don't see it happen very often anymore and I don't think very many charges are laid either.

I'm extra careful when I go to those foreign countries! Being a New Yorker, I was aware; thanks!

PS: Can't wait to be able to go to Montreal & Quebec (where I first had Escargot, in some castle-like place....)

I'm not sure that flashing high beams is really protected speech, but notifying others of the presence of law enforcement certainly is not illegal.

I don't really care either way, because I hate traffic cites unless you are truly endangering others (reckless, dui, etc).

My fur missile and I prefer to hunt felons.

Oooooo you have a fur missile?!? How is it!? I think I would get so attached that I would take it really hard if anything ever happened to him/her.......harder even than I would if I lost a human partner.
