Most managers "manage up." The main - sometimes only - thing they manage is their own boss's assessment of them. They spend all their time under their boss's desk, polishing the underside of it with their scalp. There's no way for their reports to feel like they're cared for or capably led. Impossible to see the shop floor from under that desk, yet that's where you'll find them.

Bad upper management is the root cause, by placing more value on flattery than competence, and surrounding themselves with gutless "yes-men."

I decline an offer last year because it wasnt right time to start new job.
My daughter was about to be born, I wanted to be home with family and help out as much as i can. I managed well when i was alone with infant and toddler lol. I value that time over extra $$$. I sat with my boss and told him that. I wanted him to match that. He said I will look into it over the weekend. I saw him walking around the offices trying to be busy. thanks if the offer isnt good, i will be looking. 20yrs with firm down hole.

I can't imagine communicating anything about salary through text message, and I work in technology with a bunch of nerds who have zero social skills.

Having a good work/home-time balance is great, but in the end you are at work to get paid. It sounds like you provide a good value to your employer and they know it.

I was kind of in the same boat. But I declined most offers because of travel. I did enough of that early on in my career.

When I had my talk with my boss, I had the last 5 years of paperwork that my department implemented that saved significant money and/or improved processes in the plant. Plus I told him that if I were to ever decide to leave, they would need at least two people since I am the Engineering Manager, but I'm also over IT and the Help Desk.

So while I may be writing code for an automated reactor process.....I may also be tasked that day with setting up a new user with a PC, e-mail, Terminal Services Access, etc.

He's from a Sales background, so he doesn't understand the technical side of things and how the two roles can be so different.

That sucks about the text. At least my boss was man enough to accept a Meeting Request to go over everything face to face.

I hope you get what you are asking for. Used to be time invested meant something. The only thing I have going for me here is that our processes and chemistry are so difficult. Anyone coming in our doors are typically lost for the first year they are here if they make it that long!
