VesselFinder subscription…

No I didn’t pay for a subscription. Seems when the vessel is near enough for land based comms, it will report its current position in real time (or last known position). We check a few times a day. Had fun watching the webcams - snapped enough screenshots to make animations of the Apollon Leader traveling through the locks.

Nice that you did that animation from the frame grabs, and lucky you had clear skies, at this time of year there’s often low cloud/drizzle

For M35i buyers that are "At the port" waiting for transit from Bremerhaven, I just received a call from my Sales Manager at BMW stating that the reason my car and nearly 1000 others are held up is due to trim pieces for the trunk. There are 4 in my case that cover the steel frame that are missing to finish the car. All cars have this but some were fitted before they left the factory and were shipped the soonest. The sales manager said he got this info directly from the BMW port manager. The BMW port manager did not offer a time frame for the additional parts but said they "may" ship and have trim pieces installed at the dealers.

I confirmed I am in this group too. Car at port since Sept 14... super frustrating seeing as most cars don't have this issue... no eta given here either.

By the way seems this is not just M35i models but some of the 28i models too.

My car is still in quality check at the Factory. 14 days. A call to BMW Genius got this response. "I should be happy that BMW is working hard to make sure my car is perfect..." My response was- you could make me 6 cars in the time you say it is being checked...

"Crickets"

Perhaps it is this parts issue as well?

Seems CF center with plastic peripheral. Artistically cost sensitive design.

Finally in-transit

Finally found out my X1 is on the Apollon Highway which left Bremerhaven on Oct 12 and due into Baltimore very late on Oct 26. No idea how long it normally takes to get from Baltimore to my dealer in Indianapolis. What have others experienced?

X1 was at Bremerhaven from Sep 13 to Oct 12. I sure hope the aforementioned trunk trim pieces are installed if it left the factory without them so delivery by the dealer isn't held up.

Hope all that have already got your M35i are pleased with it.

So, just a couple of quick notes. There is no spare tire. I was surprised because my son as a 2023 X1 and it has a spare.

The start/stop is barely noticeable - much like my X3. The handling is very good for an SUV. I took a few on/off ramps at good speed and body roll was minimal - for an SUV.

I didn't really punch it, so I can't say much on the acceleration. Want to break it in first. The ride is fairly stiff, but I expected this.

Can't wait to enjoy it more tomorrow!

One of the pics is next to my X3 for comparison.
Any further updates? On my 2nd X3 M40i lease, seriously considering the X1 M35i for next vehicle, would love to hear more feedback on the M35i, especially how it compares to the M40i. Are you finding it too small? Thanks

- Acceleration in S mode on par with X3 M40i non-S mode but feels quicker due to lower sitting position.
- The burps in S mode, Oh man, fireworks every time lifting foot, what a playful pony! I already transferred the X3 to my wife.
- Firmer than X3 M40i, but less body lean likely due to the front limited slip diff
- Seat contour is more comfortable than X3 M40i but a bit firmer
- The new info system is easy to use
- A bit over-steering turning corner in S mode, figure may improve in later version by software
- Loud in Sport setting and S mode in Sport setting doesn’t feel a jolt as in the other two settings; bit stiffer suspension feel in Sport setting, but not by much
- Wind noise with window open is significantly louder than X3, but who cares

All in all, I’m sooooo glad I built this little angry bird!
Same question for you, would love to hear updated impressions on the M35i, especially how it compares to the M40i. Thanks

Are there any fireworks in non-sport mode? Is there noticeable difference in exhaust sound between driving modes?

Came across GTI last year, found myself driving it 90% time while leaving the X3 M40i standby in garage. Since been looking for a GTI alternative retaining GTI ‘s merits (responsive handing, direct road feedback, high 0.97g cornering and mellow exhaust tone) but with AWD and a higher ground clearance for winter driving. Torc-R not available in the US market, old X2M35i production in hiatus, so test drove the countryman JCW and loved it but no deal given polarizing design, lack of blind spot monitor and weird HUD. Then came the news of X1M35i release, yeah, that’s it, sold.

The X1M35i meets and in some areas exceeds my expectation. For me, it’s a perfect balance between X3 M40i and GTI.

————————
X1 M35i vs X3 M40i
Personal impression
Currently 600 miles on X1 and 22k mile on X3.

Daily commute MPG(50-70mph): 29-34 vs 27-29
Acceleration: low speed: 9 vs 9; mid-high speed: 8.5 vs 9
Braking power: 9 vs 9
Body lean: 9 vs 8
Fun factor: 10 (S mode) vs 8
Cabin noise: 8 vs 9
First row passenger space: 8 vs 8
Second row passenger space: 9 vs 8
Trunk space: 7 vs 8

Daily commute worth: 10 vs 8.5
Long haul comfort: 8 vs 9 (compared with X5)

Driver’s car: 10 vs 9
Small family’s car: 9 vs 10

Burps and pops in S mode in all 3 settings (Efficient, Personal-default and Sport) and in D mode in Sport setting. Significantly different exhaust tone between S and D.

I usually drive in Efficient setting to enjoy the instant immense burst of awing energy when switching from D to S by just single light toggle at finger tip; the dramatic lamb to wolf jolt is thirst quenching and nerve soothing.

I advise my wife to use D mode in the default Personal setting and to avoid the panic inducing S mode.

The power train noise in Sport setting is just too loud for non-track driving, and the contrast between S mode and D mode is far less than in Efficient setting.

So I too have an X3 M40i. Everyone will have different opinions. I personally like my X3 more than the X1. I think the X3 looks far better - more aggressive and sporty looking. I have had several situations in that car where I pull up and someone comments to me that they love my car. I don't think that will happen with the X1. Don't get me wrong, I think the X1 looks great - I just personally think the X3 looks amazing.

I find the handling of the X1 to be better. This car really sticks to the road and has a great feel. Consequently, the ride is much more harsh. As for the acceleration and power, I think the X3 feels much faster. For me, I can really feel the extra cylinders and horsepower. If you catch the X3 just right on the highway, it will blow you away with some incredible punch. Granted, I haven't driven the X1 like that yet - I'm just not anticipating the same exhilaration.

The space inside the X1 is pretty remarkable. It is very comfortable to get in and out. My previous car was a Volvo XC40 and I always had to bend myself to get by the door frame - and I'm only 6 feet. So I appreciate that. Parked side by side in my garage, the X3 looks much larger on the outside, but doesn't feel so on the inside.

The software on the X1 is absolutely beta. It has all kinds of quirks and fails. I imagine they will iron that out, but the hardware guys definitely got ahead of the software guys on this car.

I'm kind of upset that the X1 didn't come with M sills - it has no sills - just painted metal. My son has a 2023 X1 M Sport and he has the sills. Kind of bummed about that. Hopefully, later in the year deliveries will get this.

Just my 2 cents - others opinions will definitely vary.

I actually get more stares and people stopping me to ask what model my X1 is than any other car I’ve owned. Even people stopping to take photos with my car, while I’m sitting in it replying to emails lol.

Not that I care that much, but in almost 6 years driving a X3 M40i here in NYC I've had one person tell me nice car. It's pretty much invisible here.

Good feedback - will have to test drive the X1, I would miss the M40i's power but could get over it, also want to see how the ride in the m35 is w adaptive suspension, don't want anything too stiff here in the city. also want to get a better feel for its size.

I feel it definitely drives more hot hatch like than compact sav. It’s zippy and very agile considering how tall it is. Its quite fun to be honest and I’ve been keeping it in low rpm’s on local roads until she’s broken in
