I told my buddy I wouldn't post this yet, since we're working on a thorough review and comparison of both bodies... but I couldn't wait.

well, technically he started it.
But, honestly, let me know if there are any specific comparisons or things you'd like to see or have us comment on. Also, if applicable, list the setup we would use to test for those comparisons. I'd be happy to cover the various aspects of both cameras. We played with them for a couple hours today, but I'm not going to tell you my initial thoughts just yet, since we're working on a more formal writeup. You may be surprised (both Canon and Nikon folks).

AF on a high speed object moving toward or perpendicular to the camera, specifically with a telephoto.
I'm thinking the AF should be good for me shooting jets. Cars on the freeway should be good or birds moving perpendicular.

Well Tim, my buddy is an avid Nikon user. So, he'll mostly be commenting on the D800, while I'll stick with the 5D Mark III. However, we will be spending a lot of time with both cameras, so it should be interesting. We are already in agreement with some of the ergonomic decisions made in both bodies.
Anyways, we'll work on the initial review tomorrow, and then spend some time in the late afternoon and evening taking them out in the wild for some general street photography.

haha... nice Kevin. Ironically, this weekend, some idiot "pro" photographer was borrowing my 5D2 and kept trying to put an EF-S lens on it. I was shaking my head, and then swiftly took the camera away from him.

sadly, no. It was the kit lens from a T3i. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II.

That was a "pro" Nikon shooter who borrowed a T3i from another "pro" and was unfamiliar with Canon lens mounts.
Or an idiot as you stated.

He was an idiot. Guess what he shoots with on a daily basis? The Canon 5D Mark II.
He just didn't bring his camera, since it was a 2-year olds birthday party, so he was using the parent's Canon T3i to shoot at the party until I showed up with my 5D2.

"Pro" goes to a shoot with no camera and borrows the subject's camera? Really! Do people pay him?

Yes. But, not for this birthday party, since it was his niece's bday.

Honestly, it really depends on how the testing goes, on what we do with the cameras. We're going to try to keep the shutter clicks to a minimum, but our intention is to do a thorough review of both cameras. If we don't like them, or think they aren't worth their price, they'll go up for sale. But, very briefly, our initial impressions (without taking a single shot from either camera), were that we were both impressed with the build quality and ergonomics on the Mark III. On the other hand, the D800 was packaged noticeably better, but its build quality and ergonomics left us a bit disappointed (Mike was disappointed to the point of being pissed). Anyways, I'll go into more detail later why.

Shots from the D800 showing the 36 megapixel:
This one was took with the 70-200/2.8 as well And here's the cropped version: A lot of additional samples can be found on nikonrumor's flickr account. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikonru...7629289734604/ The detail is kinda impressive compared to my D7000.

beautiful shots... really sharp, and amazing crops.
But, look at the flip side. Too much sharpness and cropping capabilities reveals too much in portraits. Zoomed out it look ok, but then zoom into her lower lip: http://www.bezergheanu.com/Other/Tes.../O/LAN1776.jpg
