Good question... It's down in my car (I hope). I combed through a bunch of them because a lot of them don't work for tall people
Il get back to you with the type. It has a pistol grip however |

My tripod is crappy. I bought it at my first attempts at HDR back in the D5000 days. Its a $30 tripod so you get what you pay for.
I dont use it much because the head is made of plastic parts that tends to bend when I have a big lens mounted on it like the 70-200. I have to use mirror up all the time on this one because else, the tripod shakes a bit when the shutter clicks. I know of some tripod buying guides; but most suggest $7-800 tripods; and up to 4 figures tripods. Steep price... I guess this is the price for a good one. I just have a really hard time to digest it and pull the trigger. I should get another one before something bad happens.

Maximus, look at the Induro line. You can get a very fine tripod for under $500 US. My C414 is the very top of their line and compares to $1000+ Gitzos.

Oh, even with a great tripod, use mirror lock up and remote release.

That BIN price is very good and reflects that the C414 is no longer in production, replaced by the CT414. There's no major difference, so saving over $100 is excellent.
My head is overkill. I use the Arca-Swiss Z1 ballhead and combine it with the Wimberley Sidekick when I use it with the 500mm. That's about a $700 rig. I've tried the Manfrotto pistol grip and found it very handy. Induro now has ballheads (a new line for them) but I haven't tried them or seen a review. Dave

Yes, the CT is $200 more.
At my shop (downstairs from my office; hence the gear addiction I have), there's a Gitzo GT2541 with GH2780QR ballhead demo which is very well made and sturdy. For $849. They have some "no sales taxes" promotion once in a while so I might just wait to get it if I cant find a better deal online until then.

I have the Bogen CF and aluminum tripods. Not the smaller ones and they do fine with the hydrostatic head. The aluminum vibrated too much and wouldn't really travel well.

I think mine is a vanguard or something. It wasn't the most expensive in the shop or the most sophisticated, it was a higher quality one that could be set up to work with someone 6'4" tall
I did try a carbon fiber one first because I wanted light weight because I figured it would mean I would almost always carry it with me. But I figure I'd need to shrink about 10" |

Reed,
Being that tall, you may want a CF anyway. The vibrations from those long legs will affect any telephoto or slow speed shots at that height. With a 300 @ 80', I had use a cable release because it got so bad. It is a 055cx pro4

I usually just use the 2 or 10 second items setting. Occasionally if I plan pultiple shots, i'll use my wireless trigger. Hopefully il have lots more opportunity to night shoot this summer. Get some star gazing done. |

It doesn't have to be just night shots. I know that if I am under 1/1500th for jets, I can get motion blur but that is a long distance.

But something to consider, if the jet were moving at 1000mph (though I'm sure it would be slower depending what jet you were shooting. It would have moved clost to 1 ft. In 1/1500th of a second. That might be part of your blur along with any camera shutter.

What about an outfielder at a baseball game against the wall 1/800th and I still get blur? The farther away, the more magnified the shake.
The jets were at ~400mph and the 1ft would apply if not panning. I have my jet panning down pretty good. 1/3200 @420mm on a crop body. Heavily cropped I know it does not focus well but this was just under the speed of sound. Maybe .9?

The Canon 24-105mm F4 lens, which is excellent, is getting cheaper by the day. Adorama (via eBay) now has them new for $829. I paid quite a bit more than that for mine two years ago and it was a refurb.
