I lament about this every summer. Take my boys to the Adirondacks for vacation. We will be going hiking. Theoretically we can encounter blackbear and cougar. I have nearly every handgun Caliber available.I have carried my Ruger SP 101 .357. Best load for that? Soft points? I've heard that hollow points will clog up with animal fur.

^This. The 1911 frame is incredibly thin.

Meh, not really. Here is what I carry.
Wow, that's a .45? It looks tiny unless you have Andre the giant hands. . This is my Sig. It's basically a seven shot 9 mm pocket pistol
Ha. Nope. I'm actually fair small in stature. Yes it is a 45. Love it and it had some weight so it actually doesn't have much of a recoil. Best gun I've ever had.

My SIG Ultra in .45 is a little smaller than a Glock 19 if you have one for reference.

Here's my SIG next to my Glock 32 (same size as the 19) and my SIG P365 with 12rd mag.

Hope it’s a 4” barreled version for more velocity and better accuracy. .357 pistol is a little light for me for bear protection but its better then banging on pots and pans. I would use hard cast, full power loads, check out Buffalo Bore ammo.
Bears have thick bodies with lots of hair and fat. You want as much penetration as possible to get to vitals. Blacks aren’t Griz and are usually much easy to dissuade.

As a competitive MTB cyclist back in the day, I have literally thousands of miles of riding in Black Bear country. I always kept a tiny bell tied to the outside of my hydration backpack to make sure the bears heard me coming. They really want no part of being around humans. Bears only become an issue if you sneak up on them.

All that being said, I would carry a firearm if I were allowed to.

Never heard the term gut gun but since you mentioned the NAA I guess you’re talking about mouse or pocket guns. In that case I have two that qualify. One is an Intratec Protec .25 ACP. The same company that brought us the Tec-9 .Bought in new i the late 80’s and really it’s an inferior little pistol that’s a jamomatic. The biggest issue is the magazine springs are very weak and won’t feed the next round cleanly. Never tried to correct the issue as it wasn’t something that needed to be done. It was only about $75 new and said what hell and I took a chance on it. It’s somewhere in the back of one of my safes and haven’t used it in years.

The other is on the opposite side of the reliability spectrum. It’s a Beretta 21A in .22lr and hasn’t missed a beat in over 30 years of owning it. It shoots everything I feed it and it’s a fun little pistol that disappears in the pocket. It’s obviously not primary carry but a good back up and just a fun little pocket rocket to cheaply plink at the range or woods with.

Since I am British, I hope it's not me! I certainly won't be wearing a red coat and walking in a long line with other British friends on the 4th just in case someone decides to double tap me with a musket

This made me chuckle.

If I were you, I wouldn't smile either. Your teeth will be a dead giveaway...

Come on that's mean. I demand a duel. Fish and chips at 10 paces....

And I have lovely teeth, perhaps why so many American women want to kiss me!

Done - long as you'll indulge me with the opportunity to have a few scotches after.

I can assure you - it isn't the teeth. It is the sound that the wind rustling through the gaps makes when you speak that attracts them. 243 years later and they still recognize the sound /accent of their master...

(I'll see myself out now - fortunately not too many American women on here, otherwise I'd be receiving death threats for that joke)

As long as you don't insist on putting ice in your Scotch? (Sin against nature!)
