My training partner that I have spoken off is kind of in the same situation. In one way....it actually helps him competitively.
He got in the way of a lawn mower when he was around 4 years old, and really chewed his leg up. Multiple surgeries throughout the years, and he has one leg that has a steel rod that runs the length of it as they never could repair his knee. So since he can't train legs, he always done upper body. Now I have mentioned to you about his genetics. even without training legs a day in his life, his legs are bigger and more muscular than most people in the gym squatting each week. He typically walks around at 210-220 and ripped, but drops down to 198 for his weight class. He then usually enters his weight class and the two weight classes above him as he can move up...just not down. He learned a long time ago that he could score a much higher payday that way as he pretty much dominates his weight class and the others above it. But if he could train his legs and had full function, he would be 240+ easily. I am talking one in a million type of genetics. But he currently has an unofficial best bench of 540lbs. I was there and spotted him. When you can routinely rep 4 plates on the bench, you are an elite in my book. Guy has 22" upper arms, 18.5" forearms,...hell his wrist is probably 9" around. And his hands are big enough to palm the 8lb medicine ball in our gym. But the kicker...a 30" waist. I will crop out his face and post a pic just to show you what genetics (this is 98% of it) and very hard work will do for you. Guy trains with an intensity like you have never seen, and consistently for over 25 years. He's our age and still considered the "King of the Hill" in his sport that everyone is trying to knock off. And before anyone thinks the wrong thing....he is "Natural". His sport is nationally tested by all the doping agencies and he has never failed once even though he gets accused all of the time. No...I don't have a "man crush" on him......but if you are serious about working out and just getting started, get with a guy like this like I was fortunate enough to do. Been training with him for a long time, and he always comes up with ways to kill me in the gym.

1200 is a short term goal for you know as you probably already hit it. Time to start thinking about the next goal!

LOL
You're tougher than that. Although I know the feeling. Never really suffered a serious injury aside from Tennis Elbow. Plus the program we are running has me doing plenty of "warm-up" and Working sets to get "in the groove" before the heavy stuff starts. SO....now I hope I haven't jinxed myself!!!

Well my goal is still 1200 then stay there or move up slowly. I just dont wanna fall.off and need to get it back. I've already been thru torn ACL and MCL and have no meniscus so glad to be back from that alright but will have some gnarly arthritis at some point probably.

Hell...that makes the 1200 all the more impressive. Maybe once you hit your goal...you can change gears a little. Replace your deadlifts with Rack-Pulls. Pull from as low a level as you can that minimizes knee involvement, and still get the benefit of strengthening all of the upper back musculature that deadlifts give. Plus since you are pulling from a higher position, you get to "stroke" your ego as the weight you use tends to go up pretty quickly.

Yeah was intending to do reps and not a 1rm butbonxe finished squat went ahead and tried for shits then repeated for other 2 moves. For 1rm for me I make rather large jumps and only do 4 repair max at lower weight and 1 or 2 once getting close.

Today marks the end of my de-load week. Heading to the gym in a few for my last workout.
So I get to set rep ranges based on my new 1RM's on my phone later. After reading FlaPatsFan progress, I'm thinking I'm going to go with a lower rep scheme so that I can start upping the weight on. Let's see what getting back into the bigger numbers feel like to my body..... and hope it holds up! |

I can put most people to shame on squat form, and depth but I have never even come close to 400 lbs for my actual 1 RM (not JM way of calculating your 1 RM). I think weight of a person, depth (quarter squats are obviously easier than below parallel), and age plays an important role (and obviously if one is on sauce or not) but no matter how hard I tried I was never actually able to do even 370 lb. |
