I had this photo from a little while back that I wanted to edit. I wasn't really sure what to do with it, so here's what I experimented with. You guys have suggestions/comments?

Looks good. Maybe a bit of vignetting that is not noticeable in the original, especially in the upper right. Nice deep colors, though.

Yeah, too much noise. Grain in old photos is much less obvious. Try reducing the noise and maybe add a sepia tint.
The pic itself is very nice, though.

better... but she's still pretty under-exposed, imo.

and OOF.
seeing this thread makes me realize just how little i process. i watched Mark's screencast...and in the time it took him to do that image (even subtracting some 'talking' time), i could have processed 40 shots. i've used photoshop like 5 times in the past 6 months. but i want to start improving my skills in it. |

I've been trying to get it right in the camera first much more than before. Finding it pretty rewarding as well. These threads are still really fun and can help lots of people learn PS skills.

I need to start doing that. I've been more careful lately about background and exposure and so on, trying to get it right in camera. I tend to over process images, I think. I look at them later and think, "WTF did I do that?"

an older image. probably among the more drastic changes i make in LR3, aside from BW and color profile conversions.
Jamie-Before by jsophoto, on Flickr Jamie-After by jsophoto, on Flickr wanted a lot of pop for this image. gives it a fun feel. so there's lots of clarity and contrast. a touch of fill, blacks boosted slightly, no saturation adjustment. a little bit of sharpening. i'm about to have a go at it with CS5. |

I try to avoid as much post as possible, I just want to take care of the main things like contrast and temperature.... that being said, i'm getting a lot more used to LR and have been changing exposure in different parts of pictures, even having 2 exposures on someones face to help even things out.
LR has some pretty great control abilities. I barely touch CS5 if i can help it, it's a bit over complicated for what i need. I did my first real attempt at an HDR the other day just to see if i could figure it out, sadly, i used the same picture for all 3 shots/exposures that i merged as i didn't do a proper bracket, it worked out ok however. Something i'll have to experiment some more with given some more time. |
