That's true... I completely forgot about that. It goes well with your pink shades.

Speaking of money and empty wallet...
How much would a perfect condition d7000 body with about 11000 clicks on the counter would go out for these days? With the kit 18-105 lens Still 4 yrs warranty. I thought of a 1250; am I about right? And what about a D5000? With 3 yrs left and maybe 4000 clicks on the counter? With the kit 18-55 lens. 3 extra batteries, 32gb class6 SD and a couple accessories. That one is tricky, I dont know how much that could be worth. Would 500 be too much? Trying to check if I could afford keeping the D7000... Would really love keeping a good dx body handy and benefit from its fast fps performance when needed to. But I know the D5000 would sleep on its shelf and my girlfriend is using it maybe 5-6 times a year (like its been doing for the last year)

Have you seen this tripod head before, Dave? Sounds pretty cool.

ALMS @ Road America on Saturday. Thinking about bringing a monopod for the day, but then again I'm so jacked that hand-holding all day shouldn't be a problem

Being the damn fool gear collector I am, I ended up with a 2xIII about 6 months ago ($350 Craigslist deal I couldn't pass up). Honestly though, it's sharp but not worth the hype. At least on my 500/4 I couldn't see any real difference between it and the 2xII. Maybe on one of the new mkII superteles the enhanced AF would make it worthwhile, but for ordinary mortals with older glass I'd give it a pass.
PS. About that new Gitzo birdwatching head - No matter how smooth the movements the center of rotation still appears to be well below the center of mass. For a big lens it's hard to beat a good gimbal head like the Wimberley... Last edited by vachss; 08-13-2012 at 08:58 PM.. |

Fluid designs make a lot of sense and I know of some people that have done it, but with big, video heads that cost over $1,000. Of course, you know that I've gone to almost 100% hand holding. I use my tripod when I'm going to focus on one subject for a long period of time and I don't expect a lot of movement. The tripod gives my arms a rest. I use the Arca-Swiss Z1 ballhead (which is also great for scenics and meteor shadows) combined with the Wimberley Sidekick, a combination that I highly recommend. Dave

It's funny, but even with a 2X TC, you're likely to crop a little, so you're working with the center of the image, which is going to be sharp. Dave
