the risk you run when using a shoot through ring and not cropping tight is distorting the model's features with a wide-angle lens. particularly at such a close distance...the nose becomes really large. i also cropped that tight to show the catchlights a bit more. typically though, i'd certainly agree with you.

Since I couldn't bring my dSLR to an indoor football game, I shot this with a point-and-shoot in jpg format.

Dave, what do you think about using a CPL in that photo?
I wanted warts and all...

I don't think that a CPL would have helped me much. The problem areas are the white at the bottoms of the eyes and some water around the mouth. DxO Optics Pro has a dynamic range expansion mode that I used to bring some detail into the back that's in shadow and then I pulled the brightness level down until only a handful of pixels were burnt out.

Besides, I don't own a CPL for my 500mm. You mount them at the back of the lens and have to leave them at one setting, or pull them in and out of the housing to adjust the CPL. Neutral density is easy to use. The lens has such great color and contrast that I very seldom feel any need to pull levels down further. Remember, I a big believer in "expose right" which means expose as hot as possible without blowing out highlights, then pull the level down in RAW conversion. I don't see where CPL and ND filters fit into that concept.

For my smaller lenses I DO have a GND filter for scenics with bright skies, but I'm more inclined to do a 3 or 5-shot HDR in those cases.

Dave

haha... well, I'm still a huge Browns fan, but I feel like I shouldn't be optimistic about anything they do. That being said, I'm going through football withdrawal and need it to start back up soon...

Some people are turned on by constant let down, I guess.

It makes me feel good that the Cleveland Gladiators beat the Pittsburgh Power to get into the AFL playoffs though

We went walking with Wifey's aunt and her husband around Lake Cadillac this evening. I opted to leave the camera in the car figuring I had a ton of pics of the lake already. Of course we see this awesome looking storm line forming on the way back to the car. This would have looked much better had I had my DSLR with me, but all I had was my Droid. This is 3 Droid images stitched together.

To geek or not to geek, that is the camera question......
You would not believe how that would have looked with a 24-104.
Pretty good anyway.
